GW5 Top Five Key Players

Fantasy Football Fix 14 Sept. 2018

Headliner - Sergio Agüero (FUL)

With a home game against a promoted team, Fantasy Premier League’s (FPL) most owned player is our headliner for gameweek five. Despite being unable to add to his goals total against Newcastle before the international break, Agüero produced four shots and four attempted assists in gameweek four coming away with one assist. As shown in the Custom stats table below, it is now 20 goal attempts by the Argentine this season which is more than any other player, and his 13 shots from inside the box (SiB) is level with Lukaku and only Wilson has managed more, with 14. What is even more interesting, is the fact that the Man. City forward has amassed a total of 10 attempted assists this season which only D. Silva and Salah can rival across all positions, with their 13. Last season Agüero scored 15 of his 21 league goals at the Etihad and had more ‘big chances’ on home turf than any teammate. That trend has continued this season with 13 of his 20 shots and all three goals coming during Man. City’s first two home fixtures. The champions have created a chance every 3.3 minutes on home turf, with 22 shots on target (SoT). Fulham have every reason to be worried, keeping in mind they have conceded a league-high 47 SiB, and also conceded the second-highest SoT with 28 at an average of seven per match. This one could be a cricket score. Our Fix Algorithm agrees, with a gigantic point score of 9.3 predicted for the Argentinian.

Mohamed Salah (tot)

There has been much talk of selling Salah ahead of gameweek five so let us take a closer look at his underlying stats and heatmap to contrast them against his explosive debut season. 13 attempted assists by the Egypt international over the first four gameweeks is joint-first only to be shared with D. Silva. No midfielder has been involved in more than Salah’s five ‘big chances’, while only Lukaku with his six and Wilson with his seven have had more amongst all players. Last season’s top FPL point scorer ranks first amongst midfielders for three stats; total shots with 19, SiB with 12, and SoT with seven. When compared with players across all positions, only Agüero has taken more goal attempts than the Liverpool midfielder with 20 shots to Salah’s 19. Tottenham’s defence has been leaky thus far, with 34 SiB conceded, which is more than sides that finish mid-table such as Bournemouth, Everton and Leicester, indicating that Salah could find plenty of opportunities to get back on the scoresheet. Our Fix Algorithm predicts a point score of 5.2 for the Egyptian.

Pedro Rodríguez Ledesma (CAR)

After being dropped to the bench against Bournemouth in gameweek four Pedro responded with a goal during his 25 minute cameo. Willian has been away on international duty with Brazil which could further boost Pedro’s chances of getting a start in gameweek five. Three goals scored by the Chelsea winger this season is on par with Richarlison, Moura and Pereyra while only Mané with four has found the back of the net more times amongst midfielders. As the table shows, the Spaniard has taken a total of 11 efforts at goal with seven of these being SiB. His six SoT is level with Mané, Alli, Schürrle and Pogba while only Salah with seven has taken more amongst midfielders. 10 goals scored by Chelsea over the opening four gameweeks is currently the second-best performance in the Premier League and can only be bettered by reigning champions Man. City with 11 goals. Sarri’s influence is already evident – the Blues have created a chance every five minutes, second only to Man. City with 4.2. Cardiff are expected to provide plenty of opportunities for the Spaniard. The Bluebirds have conceded 22 SoT, the 12th worst in the league and are likely to surrender possession to Chelsea allowing Pedro to fire in shots at will. Our Fix Algorithm predicts a point score of 4.7 for the Spaniard.

Callum Wilson (LEI)

Wilson has enjoyed a strong start to the campaign having been directly involved in five goals over the opening four matches coming by the way of two goals and three assists. As shown in the graphs below, a total of seven ‘big chances’ for the Bournemouth forward is more than any other player has had this season beating Lukaku who has six, as well as Salah and Mitrovic with their five each. The 26-year-old is also the league's front runner for SiB with 14 beating Agüero and Lukaku who both have 13, as well as Salah and Mitrovic, with their 12 each. The defeat to Chelsea in gameweek four ended Bournemouth’s unbeaten run across their first three league matches, however during their unbeaten run they did manage to score six goals just one fewer than Liverpool managed (seven) during that period. Their opponents Leicester have had a decent start to the season, with six points from their four games. They have conceded only 24 SiB so far, the seventh best in the league, and fewer than Spurs (34), which is particularly impressive considering they have played Man. United and Liverpool over that period. Wilson will be key to unlocking the Foxes defence, and is projected to score 4.4 points by our Fix Algorithm.

Marcos Alonso (CAR)

Six FPL involvements by Alonso this season is more than any other player has managed across all positions, beating the likes of Agüero, Mitrovic and Wilson with their five each. The left-back has taken at least four more goal attempts than any other defender, with 12 and his six SiB ranks joint-first across his position alongside Mustafi and Keane. What really stands out, is the fact that Alonso’s 12 goal attempts is actually more than any of his Chelsea teammates, beating Pedro with 11, Hazard with 10 and Morata with nine. Chelsea have kept two clean sheets from their opening four matches and have only conceded three times, a stat that can only be topped by Liverpool who have leaked just one goal. Cardiff have found it difficult in the top flight, and this is evidenced by the fact that over their four matches, they have notched only eight SoT, the lowest in the league, indicating that this is as close to a clean sheet banker as it gets. Our Fix Algorithm predicts a point score of 6.3 for the marauding left-back, who is also projected to be the second highest scoring defender over the next six gameweeks.
