GW26 Buy, Sell, Keep

3 March 2023

As the deadline looms closer, it is time to decide what to do with our precious free transfer(s). Aside from playing chips or selecting a captain, our transfers are the single most important aspect of our FPL campaign, and the importance of getting it right cannot be overstated.

In this article we crunch the numbers, analyse the fixtures, take advice from the Algorithm, and decide which player to buy, which player to sell, and which player to keep for Gameweek 26.

Caveat: This article was written on March 3rd, prior to the Premier League press conferences.

BUY: Ivan Toney

  • Cost: £7.6m
  • Selected by: 28.7%
  • Projected Points (Next 5 GWs): 33.4 (1st)

Ivan Toney 2

There are a number of compelling reasons to bring in Ivan Toney (£7.6m) this Gameweek, and one very good reason not to. Dealing with the latter depends entirely on your risk appetite. Having pleaded guilty to a number of offences relating to breaches of the FA’s betting code, a lengthy ban seems inevitable. The question is, when? A number of the charges are to be contested, which will likely draw out any possible sentencing. This is unchartered territory, however, so one can only make assumptions and act accordingly.

If the above is not enough to put you off, then joining the 300,000+ managers who are snapping up the Gameweek’s most popular transfer target (Live Insight) could well be the right play.

With a home game against Fulham, followed by two double Gameweeks (27 and 29), the fixtures are screaming out for investment in Brentford assets. What’s more, following Leciester’s shock exit from the FA Cup at the hands of Blackburn Rovers, Brentford no longer blank in Gameweek 28, thus adding to the appeal.

If you are in the market for a Brentford asset, then Toney is the best option by a country mile. Not only does he generate the most FPL points for Brentford (122), he is also one of the best players in terms of goal threat. Only Erling Haaland (£12.2m) can beat Toney’s xG output (14.42) this season. He is also ranked fifth amongst all players for Expected (xFPL) Points with 133.13 – Opta Stats Sandbox.

But don’t just take our word for it. Toney is also the #1 transfer target for the Algorithm, with our very own OptiBot predicting that Toney will outscore any other player over the next five Gameweeks.
