GW2 Top Five Key Players

Fantasy Football Fix 17 Aug. 2018

Headliner - Sergio Agüero (HUD)

After scoring a brace in Man. City’s Community Shield win, Agüero came close to opening his account in gameweek one, only being denied by a great save from Cech. In just 25 appearances last season, he found the back of the net 21 times with only Kane (30) and Salah (32) scoring more goals. The pair were also the only players to register more than Agüero’s 43 shots on target (SOT) and better his 27 ‘big chances’. Despite competition from Jesus, the 30-year-old started 14 out of the 15 home matches he was available for last season, producing an average of 7.3 points per game. His overall average of 6.8 points per game last season was top amongst forwards, beating Aubameyang, with 6.7, and Kane, with 5.9. As our Custom Stats Table of Man. City's home games shows – Agüero is a home banker. He scored 15 of his 21 goals at home and had more big chances than any teammate. He also had 18 goal involvements at the Etihad, more than any other forward on home soil. Man. City scored a record breaking total of 61 goals in home matches last season, at an average of over three goals per game. Their opponents Huddersfield conceded 33 goals in away matches, at an average of 1.7 goals per game. As we write this our Fix Algorithm expects Agüero to excel, with a score of 8.0

Christian Eriksen (FUL)

Eriksen has firmly established himself as a Premier League great over the last three seasons, with over 21 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) involvements each season. His underlying numbers in gameweek one as shown in the Heatmap below demonstrate his potential to achieve a high points total once again this year. His five attempted assists against Newcastle was more than any other midfielder provided in gameweek one, matched only by Watford defender, Holebas. Throughout last season, only Salah (68) took more than Eriksen’s 40 efforts on target, while De Bruyne (105) was the only player to produce more attempted assists (94). In the 2018 calendar year, Eriksen’s six goals scored was on par with Hazard and only Salah scored more amongst midfielders (15), while his nine FPL involvements was only beaten by Sané (10), Sterling (14) and Salah (20). Spurs got their campaign off to a flyer winning 1-2 at Newcastle, registering 12 SOT and displaying little sign of World Cup weariness. Their opponents Fulham offered Crystal Palace plenty of opportunities to score, conceding 10 SOT. Our Fix algorithm predicts a score of 7.2 for the Dane.

Marko Arnautovic (BOU)

Can Arnie pick up from where he left off last season? West Ham faced a tough battle in gameweek one, facing a Liverpool side that had kept a league-high total of 12 clean sheets at home last season, along with Man. United. Nevertheless, a home encounter with Howe’s Bournemouth offers much more promise for the Hammers. Marko was directly involved in 18 goals for West Ham last season, scoring 11 times and providing seven assists in 31 appearances. The Austrian was much more effective playing as a centre-forward, where he scored eight of his goals and provided six of the seven assists, during 15 appearances. As the table below shows, in 2018 (gameweek 23 to 38) only Kane (13), Aubameyang (14), Sterling (14) and Salah (20) provided more than Arnautovic’s 12 FPL involvements (that included six goals and six assists). His 20 efforts on target in that time was only beaten by Salah, with 27, and Kane, with 29, while De Bruyne (7) and Sterling (10) were the only players to provide more than his six assists. Bournemouth only kept six clean sheets in the 2017/18 season, the lowest in the league, along with relegated Stoke. 22 of the Cherries’ matches saw both teams get on the scoresheet, and their matches saw 2.79 goals scored on average, indicating that goals are usually on the cards when Bournemouth come to town which bodes well for Arnautovic.

Lucas Moura (FUL)

After providing four goals and two assists in five pre-season appearances, Moura, was rewarded with a place in the starting eleven to face Newcastle in gameweek one. Despite an unconvincing performance last weekend, where he managed just one attempt at goal, Son’s departure as a result of the Asian Games and Lamela’s injury is likely to grant the Brazilian a starting berth against Fulham. Last season saw the 26-year-old start on just two occasions for Spurs, providing just one assist. However, his history before Spurs highlights his attacking potential. In his last four seasons with PSG, Moura, was directly involved in a total of 58 league goals (that included 33 goals and 25 assists) at an average of over 14 contributions per season. In gameweek two Spurs face newly promoted, Fulham, who conceded more SOT (10) than any other team during the opening weekend. The men from North London were ruthless against the promoted sides last season, scoring 12 goals and conceding only one over their six matches. This trend is expected to continue with Spurs predicted to score a mighty 2.92 goals in gameweek two, second only to Man. City, as our Fix predicted points and stats feature highlights. Lucas should find plenty of opportunities to kickstart his season, and could be a great differential for your squad, with only 2.2% ownership.

Benjamin Mendy (HUD)

Man. City have started the new season right where they left off, with two convincing 2-0 wins over Chelsea in the Community Shield and Arsenal in their first league fixture. Mendy, was directly involved in both goals in gameweek one, providing assists for Sterling and B. Silva. Between gameweek three and five last season, the left-back produced 17 of his 20 FPL points, during three starts, at an average of 5.7 points per game. To put that into context, Alonso, Robertson and Jones were tied on 5.0 points per game and no defender had a better average score over the course of last season. During that spell, Mendy’s seven attempted assists was level with Alexander-Arnold and beaten only by Davies (9) amongst defenders. Man. City conceded just 27 goals last season fewer than any other side, on their way to keeping a total of 18 clean sheets. Huddersfield were the lowest scorers in the league, scoring only 28 goals, the same as relegated Swansea. Only 12 of these were scored in away fixtures, an average of 0.63 per game, indicating that this fixture is a clean sheet banker for the Frenchman. Our Fix algorithm expects Mendy to be the highest scoring defender over the next six weeks, with a score of 27.4
