GW14 Top Five Key Players

The Editor 27 Nov. 2017

Headliner - Eden Hazard (SWA)

Hazard (10.7) was still only owned by 5.6% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers at the end of gameweek 13. But, having laid on his third assist of the season during Chelsea’s draw with Liverpool at the weekend as well as picking up three bonus points (for the third time in four gameweeks) it will not be long before he is owned by more than 20%+. This week Conte was quoted saying “When you need surgery it is important to have the best time for your recovery. He is in a really good form and he likes to play as a striker” supporting his choice to play Hazard as a supporting striker in recent weeks. The Belgian international has been directly involved in six league goals over the last five gameweeks scoring three goals to accompany as many assists. During this time no player has weighed in with more attempted assists (17) and only Salah (9.7) has taken more shots on target with 13 to Hazard’s nine. Swansea have conceded nine goals in their last six games, losing to Burnley, Brighton and Leicester during that time and a Fix algorithm projection of 5.5 points suggests attacking returns and it would take a brave person to bet against him at the minute.

Mohamed Salah (stk)

Salah (9.7) is without question the signing of the summer to date. The Liverpool midfielder netted his tenth league goal during the draw with Chelsea last gameweek and is currently leading the golden boot race ahead of Kane (12.8), who has won it the last two seasons. The Liverpool star-man’s total of 28 shots on target this season cannot be rivalled by any other player and he sits in second place for shots inside the box with 39 to Kane’s 47. The Egyptian magician has also had the most shots on target over the last four gameweeks with 10, topping Hazard’s nine, Kane’s six and Sánchez’ (11.8) six. Stoke have not been at the races in recent weeks leaking nine goals over their last five games, including losses to Crystal Palace and Bournemouth. Liverpool on the other hand have scored 11 league goals in their last four matches which is more than any other team, so a Fix algorithm projection of 5.4 points looks to be on the money.

Marcos Alonso (SWA)

Alonso (6.9) was always going to find it challenging to maintain his standards set in 2016/17 season. The Spaniard has shown glimpses in the first 13 gameweeks that suggest he could return to that level with three goals to his name and an unrivalled shot output for a defender. The tide is beginning to turn for Alonso and Chelsea in terms of fixture difficulty with games against Swansea, Newcastle and Southampton during the next five gameweeks and no fixtures versus a “top six” opponent until gameweek 22. The Chelsea left-back has not assisted a goal in FPL so far this season, but it is worth noting that his eight attempted assists is one fewer than teammate Azpilicueta (6.9), who has so far assisted five goals. The signs are there. Alonso has also taken the most shots (21) and shots on target (6) of any defender, so his luck will surely change during this favourable fixture schedule. Chelsea face a Swansea side desperately out of form at home in gameweek 14. The Welsh outfit have managed just two goals in their last five league games and have blanked in three of those fixtures. An Alonso clean sheet looks likely but it is his set-piece duties outside the box which heighten his appeal and our Fix algorithm predicts 6.1 points for Alonso.

Kyle Walker (SOU)

Walker (6.7), alongside De Bruyne (10.1), looks untouchable within the Man. City starting 11 at present. Pep hardly needs an excuse to mix things up and with fixtures coming thick and fast over the festive period a nailed on City asset could be priceless. Only Man. United have kept more clean sheets than Man. City so far this season with nine to City’s seven and it is just eight goals conceded by the blue side of Manchester so far from 13 games – a vast improvement on last season’s defensive resolve. Over the last six gameweeks England’s first choice right-back has made three big chances which is more than any other defender, and only Azpilicueta has been able to produce more assists than Walker’s four, beating the Englishman by just one. Man. City face a Southampton side in gameweek 14 who appear to have a phobia of nets given their woeful scoring record so far this year (Everton aside). Looking beyond gameweek 13’s result (factoring in the current plight of Everton) the Saints have scored just six goals in their previous 10 league games. Man. City should be able to keep Southampton at bay and the Fix algorithm agrees with an estimated 5.6 points for Walker.

Differential - Alexis Sánchez (HUD)

Sánchez (11.8) is currently owned by just 2.7% of live teams and currently sits in only 0.7% of the top 1000 squads as of gameweek 13’s deadline. The Chilean scored for a second consecutive game during gameweek 13 taking his tally to six FPL involvements (goals/assists) from eight starts in th league this season. Three of those involvements have come by the way of goals in the last five gameweeks which could signal a return to form that saw Sánchez score 24 goals and 11 FPL assists last season. Over that same timeframe the tireless South American has attempted a jaw-dropping total of 16 attempted assists and only Özil (9.3) and Hazard have been able to top the Arsenal midfielder with 17 each. Sánchez’ nine shots on target during the last five gameweeks is on par with form player, Hazard, and it is only our other top five pick, Salah, who is able to topple them both with 13. Huddersfield have shipped in 10 goals in their last five league games and have only won two of their last 11 league games. Our Fix algorithm ranks Sánchez joint top for gameweek 14 with a point’s projection of 6.2 points.
