Expected FPL (xFPL) Points Review - A look at the stats

As shown in the image below, Mavropanos tops the Custom Stats xFPL table for Gameweek 32 with a score of 10.6. The Greek international scored both his attempts, which were deemed 'big chances' by Opta and also kept a clean sheet.

Stats for Gameweek 32

Salah attempted more shots in the box than any other player (five), but only one of those efforts was classified as a 'big chance', which resulted in a relatively low xFPL score of 5.5.

Calvert-Lewin owners can count themselves unlucky not to get a return, as reflected by his xFPL score of 7.0. The 29-year-old was joint-top for 'big chances' (three) and also registered five goal attempts.

B. Fernandes was joint-top for chances created (five), but otherwise had a quiet game. The Portuguese international failed to register a shot in the box and was involved in just one 'big chance', leading to a low xFPL score of 3.4.

Thiago reminded FPL managers of his quality with a brace against Everton. The 24-year-old registered three shots in the box, one of which was classified as a 'big chance', and also attempted one assist, helping him to an xFPL score of 8.9, the sixth-highest total.

What is xFPL?

xFPL is calculated primarily using expected goals (xG) and expected assists (xA), which combine to form expected FPL involvements (xG + xA = xI), along with expected clean sheets (xCS). These values are based on underlying statistics — for example, shot type and location determine the probability of scoring, which contributes to xG. xFPL then combines these metrics, factoring in appearance and bonus points to produce an overall expected FPL point score.

Early FPL Transfer Activity Analysed - Which players are FPL managers buying and selling?

As shown in the Transfer Analytics tool below, Haaland is the most transferred-in player ahead of Gameweek 33, with over 100,000 FPL managers adding him to their teams at the time of writing.

Transfer Activity for Fantasy Premier League 2025/26 Gameweek 33

The top five transfers in are dominated by Double Gameweek assets - O'Reilly, Cherki, Senesi and Scott all play twice in Gameweek 33 but it is worth monitoring O'Reilly's fitness as the left-back went off early against Chelsea with a potential injury.

Ekitiké, Timber and Chalobah are the top three transfers out, the trio saw no minutes in Gameweek 32. Mbeumo and Rice are also being shipped in droves for more attractive Double Gameweek midfield assets.

Looking at the top 10 forward transfer combinations, Ekitiké → Haaland (16.4%) is the most popular transfer across all positions, closely followed by Thiago → Calvert-Lewin (13.8%).

Top 10 Forward transfer combintaions

João Pedro and Welbeck are the other Double Gameweek forwards being recruited by FPL managers while Bowen and Thiago are being sold despite their double-digit hauls in Gameweek 32.

The top 10 midfield transfer combinations are more spread out with no combination greater than 5%. Five of the top 10 midfield transfers involve bringing in Semenyo with Mbeumo and Wilson the popular midfielders on the chopping block. Rogers, O.Dango and even B.Fernandes are making way with Palmer and Tavernier the other popular targets.

The top 10 defender transfer combinations are dominated by O'Reilly with four of the top 10 combinations involving the left-back. Four of the top 10 defender transfers out involve selling Virgil, despite his nine-pointer against Fulham while Gabriel is also seeing sales. Andersen, Thiaw amd J.Timber are the other defensive assets being sold with Senesi, Van Hecke and Strujik the replacements.

Budget Double Gameweek Forwards - Calvert-Lewin vs Welbeck

With Double Gameweek fever building among FPL managers, both Calvert-Lewin and Welbeck have emerged as popular targets this week, with the budget forwards also offering appealing fixtures beyond the Double.

Player Points Comparison

As the above image from our Player Heatmaps feature shows, Welbeck has scored more FPL points than Calvert-Lewin over the last six Gameweeks (35 vs 10) despite fewer minutes (450 vs 540) with the latter failing to find the back of the net over the aforementioned period.

Stats Comparison Welbeck vs Calvert-Lewin

However, the statistics in the image above paint a different picture. Despite scoring fewer goals (four vs zero), Calvert-lewin is ahead for shots in the box (11 vs 18) and Expected Goals (2.77 vs 3.61).

Welbeck does have the edge creatively though with two more attempted assists (six vs four) and 'big chances' created (two vs zero).

The minutes are worth noting too. Calvert-Lewin looks the more reliable option to start both matches in the Double, while Welbeck has often been used from the bench for Brighton this season, especially when games come in quick succession.
