The Fantasy Football Suffix - Gameweek 29 (Pt 2)

15 March 2015

With the overall average score overnight being a paltry 12 points, many managers were surprised to see green arrows after one of the most disappointing days in a while. Pretty much everyone who could flop, did flop. Would today right a few wrongs and see normal service resumed? Chelsea hosted Southampton in the early kick off, and victory could see them go 8 points clear at the top with a game in hand. But did they take advantage? Let's find out...

CHE v SOU
Matic returned to the starting lineup for the hosts, but whereas in the real world he's worth his weight in gold, in fantasy terms he's to be avoided at all costs. Alderweireld reclaimed his position in the Saints side for the first time since GW21 following injury, with Yoshida making way. Ronald Koeman finally took Graziano Pellè out of the firing line after no goals since 17 Dec. With Chelsea possibly feeling the effects of being knocked out of Europe following a draining 90 minutes against PSG, Saints could not have chosen a better time to face them. Or so you would have thought. Chelsea drew first blood; Ivanovic crossing to assist for Diego Costa to score his 18th of the season, and his first since returning from suspension three games ago. Dusan Tadic and Sadio Mané - who would be thorns in the side of Chelsea all afternoon - scored and got an assist respectively for the equaliser which was awarded after Mané was brought down in the box. The game was end to end as both teams searched for a winner, with Southampton definitely not overawed playing at the home of the league leaders. Matic was subbed off before he could be sent off after Mourinho spotted the danger signs. Fraser Forster earned his owners save points as he was called into action time and time again in the second half. Chelsea could have won it, but Ivanovic was denied a penalty claim. To be fair, 1-1 was probably the right result. Bonus points were awarded as follows:

Schneiderlin - 3pts
Tadic - 2pts
Costa - 1pt

EVE v NEW
Everton, it would be fair to say, normally suffer a bit of a hangover after their Thursday night Europa League exploits. Baines was once again fit enough to start, with Naismith dropped to the bench and Koné getting a rare start. Mirallas was absent completely and Barry was suspended. Newcastle meanwhile were without main man Papiss Cissé who started his seven match ban for spitting. 20 minutes in, and the hosts took the lead with James McCarthy scoring his first of the season from Romelu Lukaku's assist. The score line doubled when Lukaku added to that assist to score his 8th of the campaign, with former Spurs man Aaron Lennon grabbing his first assist since joining the Toffees. Midway through the second half, Newcastle centre-half Fabricio Coloccini got sent off for a challenge on Lennon. Everton left it late to put the icing on the cake, finally scoring the third deep into injury time. One time FPL starlet Ross Barkley on as a sub getting only his second of a disappointing campaign. The assist was made by Christian Atsu. Everton are surely safe now, and it is interesting that the first clean sheet in five games coincided with the return of Leighton Baines. Still pricey at £7m, but one for the Watchlist maybe?

Lukaku - 3pts
Baines & McCarthy - 2pts

MUN v TOT
Following last week's double gameweek, most fantasy managers had loaded up with Spurs players with Kane, Eriksen and Rose being popular picks. They all started, but that was about as good as it got this afternoon. Manchester United gave a first start since January to Juan Mata as a replacement for the suspended Di Maria. Falcao was once again on the bench with Fellaini preferred by Van Gaal. He must know something we don't, as it was the lanky Belgian who scored after just 9 minutes. Michael Carrick getting the assist - his first of the season. It was Carrick who doubled the lead, with the roles reversed and Fellaini causing havoc in the box and the ball falling to Carrick who nodded it in the bottom corner from 8 yards. It was 3-0 just after the half hour with Wayne Rooney grabbing his third in three games since finally being allowed to play in his favoured position. The score line stayed the same, and the second half passed off with no real talking points. Tottenham had an improved second half but United produced probably their best 90 minutes of the season and looked like there was more in the tank. They produced the kind of high tempo attack after attack style of play United fans have been accustomed to over the years and lets hope this is the turning point for the reds. Hopefully this isn't the annual collapse by Tottenham, who have a tendency to allow their season to fizzle out around this time of year. United now sit only a point behind Arsenal (who are being hailed for their form) and two points behind Manchester City. Is the time right to bring back United players into your FPL team? That's your call - but we've had these false dawns before...

Carrick - 3pts
Fellaini - 2pts
Jones - 1pt

The only real winners today were the managers who opted for Costa as their captain. The overloading of Spurs players last week came back to bite many of us as no attacking points were earned at all in a crushing defeat at Old Trafford. One game left in GW29 as Swansea host Liverpool tomorrow night. I for one have no FPL representation in that match, so I'm kind of hoping for a low scoring affair with goals and assists from 0.0% owned players!
