Finding the best budget FPL midfielders can free up valuable funds for premium players without sacrificing too many Fantasy Premier League points.
The £5.0m–£6.5m price bracket contains several appealing options who offer multiple routes to returns, including goals, assists, clean-sheet points and Defensive Contribution Points (DEFCON). Several are also expected to take penalties, free-kicks or corners while offering secure minutes for their clubs.

Ethan Ampadu (134) scored the most points amongst midfielders in the aforementioned price bracket with DEFCON a huge part of his appeal. The midfielder also racked up one goal and four assists.
As the above image from our Opta Stats Sandbox feature shows, the Palace duo of Yeremy Pino (48) and Adam Wharton (44) were the most creative in this price bracket and notched eight FPL assists combined.
That tally was beaten only by Brenden Aaronson (eight) who was ranked fifth for 'big chances' created (nine).
Pascal Groß's numbers stand out, the German international was ranked sixth for attempted assists (39) despite playing only 1636 minutes last season. With Welbeck's departure, he is likely to be on spot-kick duties as well for the Seagulls.
Granit Xhaka was fifth for FPL points (124), the Swiss international racked up one goal and six assists. As the Opta Stats Sandbox image below shows, he was also ranked fifth for DEFCON (363), with none of the four who fared better managing more than four assists.
Amongst the 5.0 midfielder options, Diego Gómez stands out. The Paraguayan international was ranked third for xG (6.11), fourth for shots on target (14) and second for 'big chances' (10).
As the above image from our Predicted Lineups feature shows, Gomez is rated at 83% to start against Villa in Gameweek 1. This makes him a great option for FPL managers looking for a cheap option to Bench Boost that week.
David Brooks could also be a shrewd pick if he can establish his starting spot under new manager Marco Rose. Under Andoni Iraola last season, the Welsh international was top for 'big chances' (12) and second for xG (6.29) in this bracket.

As the above image from our Stats Sandbox feature shows, Kevin Schade was top in the aforementioned bracket for 'Expected FPL points' (xFPL), no midfielder was afforded more 'big chances' than his 22 last season, the same number as Bryan Mbeumo who costs £2m more.

His team-mate Dango Ouattara also fared well for the same metric, the Burkina Faso international was ranked fifth for xFPL (139.00) and third for 'big chances' (18).
Harvey Barnes could be a cheeky differential with less than 5% ownership at the time of writing. The winger's gametime on the left-wing should be more secure now with Anthony Gordon's departure to Barcelona.

Enzo Le Fée enjoyed a strong debut season with the Black Cats with five goals and six assists. He also racked up 16 FPL Bonus Points with only Ryan Gravenberch (17), Kieran Dewsbury-Hall (18) and Harry Wilson (21) faring better.
As the above image from our Fixture Difficulty Ratings shows, Sunderland are ranked sixth for 'Attack Difficulty' over the opening three Gameweeks and he could be a great pick for FPL managers planning an early Wildcard.
In terms of DEFCON potential, one of last year's top performers Anderson (516) has moved clubs to Manchester City and it remains to be seen whether the England international can deliver the same level of DEFCON returns that he did at Nottingham Forest.

Meanwhile, Alex Scott's role is uncertain under new manager Rose. E.Le Fée's numbers are encouraging though and further strengthen his appeal with multiple routes to points.
Alexis Mac Allister (21.2) tops the projections for budget midfielders, but the Argentina international could be a doubt for Gameweek 1 due to his participation in the World Cup final.

Based on the analysis above, there are plenty of viable midfield options between £5.0m and £6.5m, with several capable of delivering explosive returns.
Enzo Le Fée and Pascal Groß are particularly appealing due to their expected penalty duties and secure minutes. Harvey Barnes could also emerge as a strong differential if he earns a regular starting role under Newcastle’s new manager, Matthias Jaissle.

Among the cheaper midfielders, Diego Gómez offers plenty of goal threat. However, his minutes are less secure, with Mitoma and Minteh also competing for places.
FPL managers planning to Wildcard after Gameweek 6 should also consider Everton duo Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Iliman Ndiaye, who have a favourable run of fixtures towards the end of that period.
