FPL Gameweek 1: Players and Teams with the Best Fixtures and Rotation (GW1–GW6)

Budgets are tight in Fantasy Premier League 2026/27, with Erling Haaland (£15.5m) and Bruno Fernandes (£12.0m) alone taking up 27.5% of an FPL manager’s £100.0m budget.

Finding the right budget enablers could therefore be crucial when building a successful FPL Gameweek 1 squad. By using an effective rotation strategy—starting cheaper players for favourable fixtures and benching them during more difficult matches—FPL managers can maximise value across their 15-man squads.

In this guide, we use the Fix AI Rotation Optimiser to identify the best player and team rotations for the opening six Gameweeks. You can also read our guide to the Best Underpriced FPL Players for 2026/27 to find more potential bargains for your Gameweek 1 draft.

Top Budget Defender Rotation: Forest & Coventry (£8.5m Total)

As the below image from our AI Rotation Optimiser shows, amongst the teams with defensive options at £4.5m and below, Forest and Coventry offer an excellent rotation of favourable home fixtures over the first six Gameweeks.

Fixture Rotation of Forest and Coventry for the first six Gameweeks

Forest are expected to play with a back three under new manager Oliver Glasner, using a system similar to the one the German deployed at Crystal Palace. Aina (£4.5m) is likely to operate at right wing-back and could be underpriced following his injury problems last season.

Meanwhile, Coventry had the best defensive record in the Championship last season, conceding just 45 goals in 46 matches and keeping 17 clean sheets.

Elite FPL manager's bench from team reveal for 2026/27

No player registered more assists for the promoted side than Van Ewijk (£4.0m), which may help explain why Philman—a manager with nine top-10k finishes—has selected him on the bench in his latest Elite XI Team Reveal draft. Centre-back Thomas (£4.0m) also contributed three goals and four assists.

By rotating the two budget defenders and starting only one each week, FPL managers can effectively field a defender with a home fixture in every Gameweek for a combined cost of just £8.5m. This allows more money to be invested in other positions while still maintaining valuable squad depth.

Elite 2–4 Defender Rotation – Maximise DEFCON Points

Starting one premium defender alongside two rotating budget options has long been a popular strategy among FPL managers.

With Gabriel priced at £8.0m, managers can start the Brazilian every Gameweek while rotating two cheaper defenders alongside him based on their fixtures and DEFCON potential. Ideally, each of the rotating defenders should cost no more than £5.0m.

Defender rotation two from four

As the image above from our AI Rotation Optimiser shows, rotating defenders from Manchester United, Chelsea, Newcastle and Liverpool allows FPL managers to start two players with a fixture against a promoted side in every Gameweek until Gameweek 6.

Each club also has a potential option available for £5.0m: Maguire, Colwill, Thiaw and Liverpool’s new signing, Jacquet.

Expected Goals Stats for Defenders 2025/26

As the image above from our Stats Sandbox shows, only O’Reilly (6.69) recorded a higher expected goals (xG) total than Thiaw last season.

This strategy allows FPL managers to prioritise DEFCON-friendly centre-backs rather than cheaper full-backs, while also providing strong squad depth if injuries or unexpected benchings occur.

Best Cheap Goalkeeper Rotation for an Early Bench Boost – Kinsky and Verbruggen

Rotating two budget goalkeepers has long been a popular strategy in FPL, but the £4.5m options appear limited for the 2026/27 season. Aside from the promoted goalkeepers, Verbruggen, Petrović, Leno, Perri and Kinsky are currently among the few players at that price who look likely to start regularly.

Leeds have also been linked with a move for Man City goalkeeper Trafford, meaning another potential £4.5m option could disappear. Meanwhile, Kinsky appears to have established himself as Tottenham’s first-choice goalkeeper, with Vicario expected to leave the club.

Many FPL managers may also be considering using their Bench Boost early in the season. Owning two starting goalkeepers would therefore be important, while rotating Kinsky and Verbruggen based on their fixtures could provide better weekly value beyond the chip.

Best Cheap Goalkeeper rotation

As the above image from our AI Rotation Optimiser shows, rotating Verbruggen and Kinsky gives FPL managers four home fixtures for the first six Gameweeks with the two away trips to Coventry and Sunderland in Gameweek 4 & 6.

Optimal Defender Rotation - Spend Big at the Back

Defenders were a rich source of FPL points last year with clean sheets, goals and DEFCON points, so it makes sense for FPL managers to ensure they have the optimal backline every Gameweek.

Best 3 from 5 fixture rotation

As the image above from our AI Rotation Optimiser shows, rotating defenders from Arsenal, Everton, Man United, Man City and Liverpool provides an optimal run of fixtures across the opening six Gameweeks.

This allows FPL managers to avoid Arsenal’s difficult away trips to Aston Villa and Brighton, while Liverpool defenders can be benched for their meetings with Newcastle, Bournemouth and Manchester City.

Meanwhile, Everton defenders such as Tarkowski can sit out Gameweeks 2 and 3 due to their tougher fixtures. Similarly, Maguire can be benched in Gameweeks 3 and 4 after Manchester United’s favourable opening two matches.
