Finding the best budget defenders is key to building a balanced Fantasy Premier League squad for Gameweek 1. The right £4.0m or £4.5m defender can free up funds while still offering clean sheets, attacking returns and points through defensive contributions under the DEFCON scoring system.
After covering the best goalkeeper and defender pairings in our FPL rotation strategies guide, we now assess the best budget FPL defenders based on minutes, fixtures and points potential.
FPL has taken an unusual approach to pricing this season, with every defender from the promoted teams starting at £4.0m.
Budget gems often emerge from the newly promoted sides, but selecting a defender from the strongest team does not always guarantee the best value.
Coventry recorded the best defensive numbers in the Championship last season, conceding just 45 goals. However, our Fixture Difficulty Ratings rank the Sky Blues among the bottom five teams for defensive fixtures across the opening six Gameweeks.
At the time of writing, Milan van Ewijk and Bobby Thomas are the second and third most-owned £4.0m FPL defenders, with ownership of 16.9% and 8.0% respectively. Issa Diop leads the way at 20.4%.
As our Player Heatmaps show, Thomas delivered more attacking returns last season, registering three goals and four assists compared with Van Ewijk’s six assists. The centre-back also recorded 37 shots, highlighting his superior goal threat.
Van Ewijk may struggle to repeat his attacking output from open play against stronger Premier League opposition. Thomas, meanwhile, should have greater potential for Defensive Contribution Points under the DEFCON scoring system. Based on the data, Thomas looks like the best Coventry defender to own.
Leif Davis is currently the fourth most-owned £4.0m defender at 3.9%. However, the left-back lost some set-piece duties last season and registered only two goals and three assists.
Ryan Giles, owned by just 0.6% of managers, could be the better option. The Hull left-back provided seven assists last season and is currently going under the radar.
John Egan is another budget FPL defender worth monitoring. The centre-back scored three goals last season and should also perform well for defensive contributions, giving him an additional route to FPL points.
The £4.5m defender bracket often provides some of the best value in Fantasy Premier League. Midfielders and forwards at the same price usually offer limited potential, while budget defenders can deliver clean sheets, attacking returns and defensive contribution points.
There are currently 65 defenders priced at £4.5m, with the bracket largely made up of full-backs and wing-backs. Many centre-backs with strong DEFCON potential have been priced at £5.0m or above this season.

Luke Shaw is the most-owned £4.5m defender at 24.0% and is also the budget option favoured by our elite FPL managers. The Manchester United left-back featured in our top five must-have FPL players after emerging as one of the most popular picks across the Elite Team Reveals.
Shaw played 3,220 minutes last season, the eighth-highest total among defenders, although Manchester United’s Champions League schedule could increase his rotation risk.
Our Player Comparison Matrix highlights Shaw’s limited attacking output, with only 0.4 attempted assists per game. Vitalii Mykolenko recorded 0.7, while Antonee Robinson averaged 1.0. The pair also rank first and second for penalty-area actions among these options.
Ola Aina missed a significant part of last season through injury and may therefore be underpriced at £4.5m.
As the above image from our AI Rotation Optimiser shows, rotating Aina with Thomas offers attractive home fixtures for each of the first six Gameweeks for a spend of just £8.5m.
Defensive contribution points proved to be a more reliable route to FPL returns than goals or assists for many defenders last season, meaning there is still strong value to be found among the £4.5m options.
As our Opta Stats Sandbox shows, no £4.5m defender recorded more DEFCON than Joe Rodon last season. Leeds were also strong at home, conceding only 21 goals across their home matches, the eighth-best record in the league.
Luke Shaw recorded 224 defensive contributions, while Vitalii Mykolenko registered 247. Both rank inside the top five among £4.5m defenders, further strengthening their appeal as budget FPL options.
Kayode is also worth considering, the right-back was the most creative defender in this price bracket with 34 attempted assists, as shown in the Stats Sandbox image below. He was also sixth for DEFCON (219) and minutes played (3258).
De Cuyper (32), Cash (30) and Mitchell (29) are also worth considering but it is worth noting that the Brighton Full-back only featured for 1414 minutes last season.
Based on the analysis above, Thomas looks like the standout £4.0m FPL defender. He also rotates well with a Nottingham Forest option, with the team expected to improve under Oliver Glasner.
Among the £4.5m defenders, Luke Shaw’s popularity is understandable, although Manchester United’s Champions League commitments could increase his rotation risk. Vitalii Mykolenko also offers strong value as a regular starter in a settled Everton side under David Moyes.
Joe Rodon remains a strong differential, with the Welsh international selected by just 2.0% of FPL managers. He also offers attacking threat, recording 18 shots inside the box last season. Only Lewis Dunk managed more among defenders in the same price bracket.
