Gameweek 25

For most, Gameweek 25 has been something of a disappointment with highly owned assets from Manchester United and Newcastle not featuring and the resultant lack of bench options, meaning many have been stung by injuries and rotation of key players.

For James, the news that Aleksandar Mitrović (£6.8m) did not make the squad came as a disappointment; with no bench player to take his place, the 0-pointer was locked in.

James was also one of the 600,000 FPL managers who brought in Darwin Núñez (£8.8m). The Uruguayan forward didn’t even make the squad due to – it is believed – a knock he picked up against Real Madrid midweek. Especially annoying for James is the fact that Harry Kane (£11.7m) was the outgoing transfer. James and his fellow Darwin owners will be hoping the Liverpool forward recovers in time to face Wolves on Wednesday evening.

Fortunately for James, Arsenal’s Gabriel (£5.2m) – owned by just 12.8% of the Top 100k, according to Live Insight – was on hand to stem the bleeding with a clean sheet and full bonus points, following their 1-0 victory over Leicester City.

I’m grateful that Gabriel has come in this week and helped ensure it’s merely bad and not terrible! The battle between the double Gameweek midfielders is yet to be resolved, but I’m happy to have Salah (C), Saka and Ødegaard still to play - even if (irritatingly and counter-intuitively) Saka’s EO means he actually loses me rank if he returns. The hit I did a couple of weeks ago for Martinelli to Ødegaard has aged terribly - I feel like it was correct from an xMins [Expected Minutes] point of view but the points have not followed, annoyingly. The less said about the strikers the better! Kane to Darwin was a common move and looked attractive on the face of it - just frustrating we didn’t know the full story about that injury issue until it was too late.
