Southampton earned a well-earned draw against the league leaders at St. Mary's. The South Coast outfit restricted the reigning Champions to just 1.61 'Expected Goals' (xG) while notching 0.93 xG themselves. The hosts took just seven shots but landed three of these on target while their visitors could only manage five shots on target (SoT) from their 20 shots.
De Bruyne led the way for shots (five) but registered just 0.10 xG which indicates these were all speculative long-range efforts. B. Silva was the game's most creative player with five attempted assists and his owners were perhaps unlucky not to register any returns. Sterling led the way for xG (0.44) while Broja (0.40) also looked impressive, and once again underlined his credentials as a budget forward that should be considered. Bednarek (0.38) was the third-highest for xG and is probably the best Saints' defensive option when their fixtures turn.
Man. Utd were good value for their win with an xG of 1.69 compared to just 0.27 xG for their visitors West Ham. The Hammers only managed six shots with just one finding the target. That being said, Man. United were a tad wasteful as well, they managed to land just three of their 18 shots on target.
Ronaldo was top for shots (three) but registered just 0.21 xG which indicates that none of these were 'big chances'. Rashford was by far the best player for xG (0.85), courtesy of his late winner from point-blank range. B. Fernandes was the most creative player with four attempted assists and the 27-year old continues to present himself as a viable alternative to Ronaldo. West Ham’s Antonio managed just a single shot with an xG of 0.04, while Bowen also fared poorly with a solitary goal attempt matching Antonio’s 0.04 xG.
Liverpool were a tad fortunate to come away from Selhurst Park with all three points, the Eagles posted significantly better numbers with 1.78 xG compared to just 1.38 for the visitors. Liverpool were much more clinical with their finishing, landing seven SoT from 14 goal attempts, while Palace could only test Alisson five times.
No player took more shots than Henderson (four) in the game but the Liverpool captain only landed an xG of 0.17 for his efforts. Fabinho was top for xG (0.83), which can be largely attributed to his penalty but the next two were Palace players Edouard (0.56) and Gallagher (0.50) which again emphasises how wasteful Palace were. Robertson was the game's most creative player with three attempted assists while his more popular team-mate Alexander-Arnold attempted none. Jota also posted poor numbers with just one shot and two attempted assists. The Portuguese international has been asked to play a wider role in the absence of Mané and Salah which is having a detrimental effect on his output.
Chelsea were deserved winners against their London rivals at Stamford Bridge with an xG of 1.19 compared to just 0.40 for Spurs. The European Champions restricted their visitors to just six low-quality chances while they tested Lloris on seven occasions.
No player has landed more SoT than Ziyech (four) in gameweek 23 so far and the Moroccan also created two chances in an eye-catching display. It is worth mentioning that he registered an xG of just 0.14 from these shots which were all from outside the box. Hudson-Odoi led the way for xG (0.38) and also came away with the assist for Ziyech's goal. Mount was the most creative player on the pitch with four attempted assists, but investment in the 23-year old cannot be advocated with Chelsea blanking in three of the next four gameweeks. Meanwhile, Bergwijn was top amongst Spurs players for shots (two), and it will be interesting to see if he continues to start for Conte’s side.
