FPL Gameweek 3 Stats: Which Players Impressed?

Jayden Bogle leads the expected FPL points table

Jayden Bogle notched an expected FPL points (xFPL) score of 12.8 in Gameweek 3, the highest total in our Custom Stats table.

The 26-year-old scored from his only attempt, which was classified as a big chance by Opta.

Stats for Gameweek 3

Martin Ødegaard could be a midfield FPL bargain

After a poor season blighted by injuries, Martin Ødegaard has shown signs he can replicate his form from the 2022/23 and 2023/24 seasons where he registered a combined 23 goals and 19 assists.

The Norwegian international attempted two shots in the box, one of which was classified as a big chance and also attempted four assists, two of which were classified as big chances created. His 12.3 xFPL score was the highest of any attacker this Gameweek.

Spurs defence could offer value in FPL

Tottenham Hotspur kept their first clean sheet of the season and there are several budget options in their backline which appeal.

Micky Van de Ven notched maximum bonus to go along with his clean sheet and was only one defensive contribution (DEFCON) away from hitting the 10-point threshold.

The Dutch international also had two attempts in the box, one of which was classified as a big chance and notched an impressive xFPL score of 11.4.

Erling Haaland Triple Captainers were unlucky

Several FPL managers backed Erling Haaland with the Triple Captaincy against Coventry City, the Norwegian international took four attempts in the box, two of which were classified as big chances and as his xFPL score of 10.9 shows, he could have had a bigger haul on another day.

Is the Rayan Cherki bandwagon derailed?

Rayan Cherki was the most popular transfer in for Gameweek 3 but the Frenchman failed to deliver any FPL returns for his owners.

His underlying numbers were still good though, he attempted three shots in the box, one of which hit the woodwork. He also attempted three assists, one of which was classified as a big chance.

His xFPL score of 4.9 indicates that there is still reason to hold faith in the Frenchman and his performance against Porto in the Champions League midweek will need monitoring.

What is xFPL?

The expected FPL points (xFPL) model estimates how many points a player’s performance was likely to produce. The calculation uses underlying data including expected goals, expected assists, expected clean sheets, appearance points and projected bonus points.

It is best used to assess the quality of a player’s performance rather than simply looking at his final FPL score.

Morgan Rogers scored his second goal of the season and has already risen in price overnight.

Alexander Isak bagged a brace against Ipswich to up his stock against Fulham next weekend, while Yoane Wissa continues to be popular despite a blank against Bournemouth.

At the other end of the market, Nico O'Reilly was a late withdrawal from the Manchester City squad due to an injury and is currently the most sold player with over 200,000 transfers out.

Dominic Szoboszlai is also being sold in droves after a blank against Ipswich, while the Manchester United duo of Bruno Fernandes and Bryan Mbeumo are also seeing significant sales.

Most-popular FPL forward transfers

Calvert-Lewin to Wissa accounts for 30.3% of the leading forward transfer combinations, and is the most popular transfer by a distance across all positions.

Igor Thiago's three consecutive blanks have also seen his FPL backers lose patience, the Brazilian international is making way for Wissa and Isak. Thierno Barry is also a popular target after the Toffees sold Beto.

Most-popular FPL midfielder transfers

Selling Manchester United players is the theme of the week in midfield with Bryan Mbeumo and Bruno Fernandes occupying five of the top 10 midfielder transfer combinations.

Chelsea midfielders are the popular replacements with Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer appearing in 8 of the top 10 midfielder transfer combinations. Cherki and Gakpo are the other two popular midfield targets.

Meanwhile, the Liverpool duo of Florian Wirtz and Dominic Szoboszlai are also seeing significant sales along with Antoine Semenyo and Christian Tzolis.

Most-popular FPL defender transfers

The theme of getting rid of Manchester United assets continues in defence with Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire appearing in 5 of the top 10 defender transfer combinations. The injured Joe Rodon is also being sold in droves.

Ezri Konsa and John Egan are popular replacements and appear in all but two of the top 10. Maxim De Cuyper and Amar Dedic are also being brought in.

Budget Forwards Compared: Dominic Calvert-Lewin vs Yoane Wissa vs Thierno Barry

Budget forwards Calvert-Lewin, Yoane Wissa and Thierno Barry have all found the back of the net just once this season, but the Leeds striker appears to be the one being sold in favour of the latter two.

Player Comparison Calvert-Lewin vs Wissa vs Barry

As the above image from our Fix Comparison Matrix feature shows, there is not much to split the trio when it comes to the underlying statistics.

However, it is worth noting that the cheapest option Thierno Barry leads the comparison for shots (nine), shots on target (three), attempted assists (three), big chances (four) and expected goals (two).

The analysis would indicate that sticking to whichever option FPL managers currently own is probably the wisest move. But if buying today, Thierno Barry is the standout pick with his expected minutes significantly improved after Beto's sale.
