Phil Foden: The proven Manchester City alternative to Cherki

  • Ownership: 4.7%
  • Fixture: Coventry (H)
  • Predicted points: 5.3

Rayan Cherki is attracting most of the attention before Manchester City host Coventry, but Phil Foden offers an intriguing alternative differential strategy.

Both players have started the season strongly as creators: Foden has supplied two assists from five attempted assists and had five shots, while Cherki has two goals and two assists from three attempts and seven attempted assists.

Foden also leads the pair for expected goals, 1.03 to 0.64, while their expected-assist totals are almost identical at 1.28 and 1.30 respectively. You can read our full Foden versus Cherki comparison for a closer look at the decision.

The significant difference may be minutes. Foden has played 172 across the opening two Gameweeks, compared with Cherki’s 110. That makes the 26-year-old England international more than a short-term play for the Coventry fixture; he may also be the steadier long-term route into City’s attack.

Cherki’s recent interview adds another layer of uncertainty. He said he told the coach: “Give me five minutes and you won’t need to make the change anymore.” He later described the relationship as one in which the pair would push each other. That competitive edge could bring the best out of him, but it also hints at a potentially volatile dynamic rather than proving he is securely first choice.

Premier League fixtures ranked by attacking difficulty for next 5 Gameweeks

Foden’s appeal also extends beyond Gameweek 3. Manchester City rank second in the Fixture Planner for attacking fixtures over the next five Gameweeks, with home matches against Coventry, Sunderland and Ipswich alongside trips to Manchester United and Liverpool. That favourable schedule strengthens the case for selecting Foden as a longer-term differential rather than simply targeting the Coventry fixture.

Morgan Gibbs-White: Forest’s talisman can punish fragile Spurs

  • Ownership: 8.9%
  • Fixture: Tottenham Hotspur (H)
  • Predicted points: 5.1

Morgan Gibbs-White experienced the full force of early-season FPL price movement. A blank against Leeds in Gameweek 1 prompted enough sales to trigger a price drop, only for him to punish those sellers with a 13-point haul away to Liverpool a week later.

The timing of a home meeting with Tottenham could hardly be better. Spurs have looked woeful and disjointed across their opening two matches, with Roberto De Zerbi’s new signings yet to click as a unit.

Gibbs-White stats for FPL from the 2025/26 season

The 26-year-old England midfielder produced the best league campaign of his career in 2025/26. He played 37 matches, scored 15 goals and accumulated 188 FPL points, averaging 5.1 per game, as shown in the Opta Comparison Tool. This made him the fifth-highest-scoring player in FPL.

Gibbs-White also supplied four FPL assists, generated 6.19 expected assists and created five big chances, suggesting he was unfortunate not to register more assists.

Predicted points for FPL over the next four Gameweeks

He is not cheap at £7.9m, but the Predicted Points & Stats Tool ranks him fourth for projected points over the next four Gameweeks, with a total of 20.6.

At 8.9% ownership, Gibbs-White is the most popular player on this list, but he still comfortably qualifies as a differential.

Kevin Schade: Penalty-box threat with form and fixtures

  • Ownership: 3.7%
  • Fixture: Sunderland (H)
  • Predicted points: 4.4

Kevin Schade enters Gameweek 3 fresh from a 10-point return against Leeds. That performance should give the Brentford attacker confidence ahead of a home meeting with Sunderland, while his 3.7% ownership means most managers can still benefit if that form continues.

Schade shot map versus Leeds in FPL Gameweek 2

The 24-year-old Germany international possesses the direct running and penalty-box instincts that suit Brentford’s style. He registered three shots inside the box against Leeds, with only Igor Thiago managing more for the Bees with five, as shown by the Opta Shot Map in the Match Centre feature.

His 2025/26 numbers reinforce that threat. Schade scored eight goals in 35 appearances, with his 9.35 expected goals showing that his output was supported by a strong chance profile. An impressive 56 of his 57 attempts came from inside the penalty area, while he registered 24 shots on target, five FPL assists and seven big chances created.

Schade’s home record adds to his appeal against Sunderland, with six of his eight league goals last season coming at the Gtech Community Stadium.

Luka Vuskovic: The quieter route into Brighton’s defence

  • Ownership: 2.4%
  • Fixture: Leeds (H)
  • Predicted points: 4.1

Brighton’s matches against Leeds at home and Coventry away represent one of the most attractive short-term defensive schedules.

They then face a tougher test at home to Arsenal, but that is followed by Sunderland away and Crystal Palace at home. Overall, it remains a favourable run for FPL managers seeking a new defender.

Most transfer activity is likely to focus on Maxim De Cuyper. The Belgian has already risen twice in price and has been playing out of position on the left wing, helping to explain the rush to buy him.

However, that advanced role may not be permanent. De Cuyper has moved forward while Kaoru Mitoma has been unavailable, and there is still no definitive date for the Japan international’s return. Once Mitoma is fit, De Cuyper could drop back into defence and lose much of the attacking appeal that drove those transfers. The Gameweek 3 press conference will therefore be important to monitor.

Luka Vuskovic offers an alternative route into the same fixtures. The 19-year-old Croatian international started both of Brighton’s opening matches and provides a compelling blend of set-piece threat and defensive-contribution potential. During his 2025/26 Bundesliga season with Hamburg, the centre-back played 28 times and scored six goals from 5.76 expected goals.

Premier League team's project clean sheets

Vuskovic was even more impressive for DEFCON-style actions. His 251 clearances, 26 blocks, 40 interceptions and 22 tackles produced 339 defensive contributions in 2,442 minutes — approximately 12.5 per 90. That profile can provide a useful safety net when Brighton fail to keep a clean sheet, while Leeds and Coventry give him a realistic opportunity to add shut-out points. The Predicted Points & Stats Tool ranks the Seagulls behind only Arsenal and Manchester City for projected clean sheets over this period.

Kristoffer Ajer: A dependable DEFCON route into Brentford

  • Ownership: 4.5%
  • Fixture: Sunderland (H)
  • Predicted points: 4.5

Kristoffer Ajer featured in our Gameweek 2 differentials, and the underlying argument has only strengthened. The Brentford defender has reached the DEFCON threshold in both of his opening appearances, recording 27 defensive contributions at a rate of 13.5 per match.

The latest example came against Leeds, when Ajer made 15 clearances. A late equaliser denied Brentford the clean sheet, but his defensive workload once again showed why he is capable of returning points without relying entirely on a shut-out. That matters in the new scoring system and makes him a more resilient pick than a defender whose appeal rests solely on fixtures.

The 28-year-old Norway international produced 190 defensive contributions in 1,807 minutes during 2025/26, which works out at roughly 9.5 per 90. This season’s early rate is even stronger, suggesting Ajer is well suited to farming DEFCON points when the Bees are forced to defend their box.

Sunderland at home offers immediate clean-sheet potential before a trip to Bournemouth. There will always be some fitness and selection risk around Ajer, but two starts and two DEFCON returns make him a credible low-owned option while the schedule remains favourable.

Which Gameweek 3 differential should FPL managers choose?

Foden has the highest ceiling of the five and looks particularly attractive for managers who want Manchester City coverage without following the rush towards Cherki.

Gibbs-White offers the strongest talismanic role, while Schade combines an affordable price with genuine penalty-box threat and a favourable home fixture.

In defence, Vuskovic has the better pair of fixtures and greater set-piece potential, whereas Ajer’s established DEFCON numbers provide a more dependable secondary route to points.

The right choice will depend on team structure, but all five remain under 10% ownership and have the potential to turn a good Gameweek into a significant rank gain.
