FPL Best Defender Rotations: Could Rotating Cheap Defenders be the key to FPL success this year?

Fantasy Premier League is live for the 2025/26 season and there is a new scoring system that rewards Defensive actions.

Any defender that accumulates a combined total of 10 clearances, blocks, interceptions and tackles (CBIT) in a single match will be awarded two FPL points.

Defensive Contribution Points (DCP) are capped at two per fixture, so whether a defender makes 10 or 30 CBIT, they will earn no more than two FPL points.

This boosts scoring potential - defenders can now hit 11 points with a clean sheet, three bonus points, and full DCP.

Budget defenders could even score three points despite conceding twice, rather than receiving just one point, as they would have in the past.

You can see the top DCP beneficiaries using the Fix Custom Stats Table.

Top Budget Defender Rotation: Villa & Burnley (£8.5m Total)

As the below image from our AI Rotation Optimiser shows, amongst the teams with starting £4.5m defenders, Villa and Burnley offer an excellent rotation of favourable fixtures over the first eight Gameweeks.

Best 4.5 Defender rotation

Villa conceded only 20 goals at home last season (sixth) while Burnley had the best defensive record in the Championship with only 16 goals conceded all season.

As this Custom Stats Table shows, Konsa made 108 Clearances, 11 Blocks, 25 Interceptions and 35 tackles last season and should fare well for DCP, while Burnley have a potential bargain in Estève, who comes in at just £4.0m.

Elite 2–4 Defender Rotation – Maximise DCP Returns

Playing one more expensive defender alongside two rotating cheaper defenders has been a popular strategy amongst FPL managers.

With so many attractive options available at £5.0m, this strategy is more viable than ever before.

Best 2-4 Defender Rotation

As the above image from our AI Rotation Optimiser shows, a set of defenders from Spurs, Forest, Fulham and Palace sets FPL managers up nicely over the first eight Gameweeks.

In the first four Gameweeks, the rotation exclusively offers home fixtures with three games against promoted sides.

Custom Stats Table with Defensive Contribution Points Potential

As the above image from our Custom Stats Table shows, Lacroix (£5.0m), Udogie (£4.5m), N. Williams (£5.0m) and Robinson (£5.0m) were amongst the top 10 defenders for Tackles and are likely to benefit from the new DCP.

Best 3-5 Defender Rotation - Everton In

As the below image from our Custom Stats Table feature shows, Murillo (£5.5m), Tarkowski (£5.5m) and Milenković (£5.5m) were amongst the top five defenders for Clearances last season and would have racked up 38, 44 and 26 extra FPL points respectively had the DCP been in place.

Best Defenders for Clearances

Given the strong defensive record of both Forest and Everton last season, especially at home, you would expect FPL managers to invest in this rotation, as shown below.

As the above image from our AI Rotation Optimiser shows, playing three defenders from a pool of Spurs, Everton, Forest, Villa and Palace offers an excellent set of fixtures without having to spend more than £5.5m.

Spurs and Villa have some options at just £4.5m while Everton, Forest and Palace have options at both £5.0m and £5.5m price points, making this an excellent value proposition.
