Fee – £60 million
Primary Position – Attacking Midfield
Other position(s) – Right Winger / Left Winger
Last season’s form – Games 31 / six goals, eight assists
Born in Székesfehérvár, Hungary in 2000, Szoboszlai spent the majority of his youth career at Főnix Gold and made his senior debut with Austrian club FC Liefering in 2017. He enjoyed a successful spell with three league titles and two domestic cups before moving to RB Salzburg for a fee of €20 million in 2017. He made 16 appearances for Salzburg in 2018/19 with three goals and four assists. His numbers improved massively the following season with nine goals and 14 assists in 27 league appearances. He made only 12 league appearances in 2020/21 and registered four goals and seven assists. He signed for RB Leipzig in December 2020 for a fee of €20 million and the following two seasons saw him register 62 appearances with six goals and eight assists in each campaign.
Long-range goals and through balls are considered Szoboszlai's specialty, he was ranked fifth for chances created per 90 (2.50) over his two Bundesliga seasons. A versatile player, he can play as a no.10 or either side of midfield which bodes well for starting prospects under Klopp. He is also likely to take some set-pieces but might have to compete with Alexander-Arnold and Robertson. As the below image from our Fixture Planner shows, the Merseyside outfit have a mixed run of fixtures with difficult trips to Chelsea and Newcastle in the first three but these games should still see the Reds score goals.
As the below image from our Stats Sandbox feature shows, despite a disappointing campaign Liverpool still created plenty of chances, only Man. City (77.10) registered a higher 'Expected Goals' (xG) tally than their 75.70.
The addition of the Hungarian should only improve their attacking output and while it remains to be seen whether he is a good FPL option himself, his creativity will surely help their other attackers such as Salah get plenty of chances.
