GW8 Stats Review

Fantasy Football Fix 20 Oct. 2021

xFPL is calculated primarily using expected goals (xG), assists (xA), which combine as Fantasy Premier League (FPL) involvements (xG + xA = xI), as well as expected clean sheets (xC). These numbers are a result of underlying statistics (i.e. shot type and location will give a probability of scoring = xG). xFPL is the combination of these statistics and factors in appearance and bonus points to give an overall expected FPL point score.

Firmino tops the Custom Stats xFPL table for gameweek eight with a score of 12.8. The Brazilian scored from all three of his attempts, all of which were 'big chances' and also attempted three assists. B. Silva continues to go under the radar as an FPL option, the Portugal international posted similar numbers to Firmino with three shots in the box (SiB) and three attempted assists but just one of those shots was a 'big chance' which explains his slightly lower xFPL score of 11.3. Kane also showed glimpses of a return to form with an xFPL score of 8.6.

Southampton forward Broja, who costs a bargain bucket cost of just 5.0, announced himself to the FPL landscape with an impressive display against Leeds. The Albanian international took a whopping five SiB in gameweek eight, no player across the league managed more. Salah continues to post impressive shot numbers with four SiB against Watford but it is worth mentioning none of these attempts were 'big chances'. Ndombele is also an intriguing FPL option at 5.8, he has started the last two games playing in an advanced role just behind Kane and took four SiB against Newcastle.

The league's most creative player B. Fernandes continued to dominate the chances created stats with eight attempted assists in gameweek eight. It is quite telling though that he managed zero SiB which implies he has taken on more of a withdrawn, creative role after the signing of Ronaldo. Redmond played up top alongside Broja and attempted six assists. The chances he created were of better quality than United’s no. 18, with an xFPL score of 9.1 to B. Fernandes' 3.2. Budget option Townsend continues to post impressive numbers with five attempted assists, however, a low xFPL score of 2.8 indicates these were not high quality chances.
