GW37 Top Five Key Players

The Editor 3 May 2018

Headliner - Gabriel Jesus (HUD, BRI)

Jesus, marginally gets the nod over a miss-firing Kane this week, given that Man. City look worryingly good every time they play, so, 120+ minutes for Jesus over the two games could well be more than sufficient for the top points' score in double gameweek 37. Jesus, has been directly involved in seven goals over the last six game, scoring four times and providing three assists; while only Sterling, with 10, and Salah, with eight, have provided more Fantasy Premier League (FPL) involvements. Over the last five gameweeks only Sterling can match the Brazilian for ‘big (scoring) chances’ with seven, while Zaha, with nine, is the only player to have taken more shots on target than Jesus’ eight. When compared with Kane, over the last five gameweeks, Jesus, has provided more FPL involvements, six to three, taken more shots on target, eight to five, and been involved in more than double the amount of ‘big chances’, seven to three. Man. City will play Huddersfield and Brighton at home in double gameweek 37 and our Fix algorithm currently predicts 6.62 goals. Jesus, is predicted to score 13.2 points which compares favourably to Kane’s 12.1 points. Huddersfield and Brighton have conceded a total of 25 goals across their last five games up against “top six” opponents at an average of 2.5 goals a game. Away at the Champions spells danger, Jesus looks to be a real contender for captaincy.

Leroy Sané (HUD, BRI)

Sané, has not featured in our “Top Five” for a little while now having fallen victim to Guardiola’s selection roulette. Sterling of course is the obvious pick, but, if you are playing catch-up in your mini-leagues then you will do worse than opting for the PFA’s Young Player of the Year, who should see significant minutes in Man. City’s last three games. The attacking midfielder found his 10th league goal of the season upon his return to the starting lineup against West Ham, after being given a rest in gameweek 35. Sané has been directly involved in 22 league goals this season, with 10 goals, and 12 assists to his name, and only De Bruyne, with 25, Sterling, with 35, and Salah, with 42, have provided more FPL involvements, amongst midfielders. And, the Champions have shown no signs of slowing down, averaging 4.5 goals per game across the last two gameweeks. In fact during the last four matches played Man. City have produced the most goals with 14, from 17 ‘big chances’. By comparison, Spurs have scored just six goals over that period, from eight ‘big chances’. As referenced in our piece on Jesus, Man. City will face two clubs who have performed particularly badly up against “top six” opponents this year. Sané has produced a point every 13.5 minutes played, which is better than De Bruyne’s 14.6 minutes, so, we expect good returns from the left-sided midfielder over the double gameweek. Our Fix algorithm projects 11.5 points for Sané.

Jan Vertonghen (wba, NEW)

Vertonghen, appears to be the safest route for clean sheet potential in double gameweek 37 given that he is likely to start both games, which cannot be confidently said of Davies, Trippier, Jones and Man. City’s defence (although, Danilo, could be an option if Walker’s injury is serious). Even Smalling and Valencia could be rotated with their gameweek 38 fixture only three days apart from their second fixture in double gameweek 37. Spurs picked up their 15th clean sheet of the season in gameweek 36 and Vertonghen has made more ball recoveries, 229, clearances, 151, interceptions, 64, successful net tackles, 25, and won more aerial duels, 114, than any other Spurs’ defender this season, giving him an advantage when it comes to the Bonus Points System. No team has kept more clean sheets, seven, or conceded fewer goals, eleven, than Spurs during this calendar year and only Liverpool, Man. City and Man. Utd have kept more clean sheets across the season, with 16 and 17 respectively. Tottenham face West Brom away and Newcastle at home in double gameweek 37 and are expected to keep 1.03 clean sheets from the two fixtures, pitting them just behind Man. City (in top spot) with a projection of 1.27 from their two fixtures. Vertonghen showed appetite to get in and amongst the goals at home to Watford on Monday and he is probably the most sensible choice for clean sheet points in double gameweek 37.

Marko Arnautovic (lei, MUN)

Arnautovic, went head to head with Tadic this week to claim our mid-priced midfielder spot. While Tadic’s recent flurries have seen him net three goals in his last two games it is Arnautovic’s consistency across the season which mean the Austrian gets the nod over of the Serbian. The Austrian international has provided an impressive 10 goals and five assists in his debut season at West Ham, with 11 of his 15 FPL involvements coming across just 12 appearances as a centre-forward, where he continues to play. Arnautovic has been directly involved in 10 league goals during 2018, a number on par with Alli, Mané, Eriksen and De Bruyne and only Sterling and Salah, with 15 and 18, have more FPL involvements this calendar year. Over the last five gameweeks his 13 efforts from inside the box is on par with Salah. Meanwhile, the West Ham man has taken eight shots on target across the same period which is on par with Jesus. West Ham are struggling to find any momentum at the minute, but the same could be said for their first opponent in double gameweek 37, Leicester. The Foxes have conceded nine goals in their last four league games and have won none. Man. United at home looks tougher on paper, but, West Ham have scored seven goals in their last five home games. Arnautovic is forecast to land 7.8 points via our Fix algorithm in the double gameweek and looks to be the best mid-priced midfield option.

Jordan Ayew (bou, SOT)

Ayew, forces his way back into our “Top Five” as the budget forward of choice going into the double gameweek, after a disappointing performance when we bravely selected him versus Chelsea last week. But, it is the enticing fixtures for the double gameweek which mean he retains his place. With seven goals and two assists to his name no player has been directly involved in more goals for Swansea this season. Over the last three gameweeks the forward’s four efforts from inside the box is joint top amongst Swansea players, with brother Andre, and his five attempted assists can only be beaten by Carroll, who has attempted six. Swansea are the pick of the bunch for double gameweek 37, of the teams that have cheaper assets, with two favourable looking fixtures. The Swans will face Bournemouth away followed by Southampton at home and will be hoping to pick up points from both, with relegation staring them in the face, Of the strikers priced at 8.5 and under, who should be “guaranteed” to start both games across double gameweek 37, Ayew, is predicted to score the most points with a calculation of 6.8. A good option and enabler.
