GW35 Lessons Learned

Fantasy Football Fix 9 May 2023

xFPL review

xFPL is calculated primarily using expected goals (xG), assists (xA), which combine as Fantasy Premier League (FPL) involvements (xG + xA = xI), as well as expected clean sheets (xC). These numbers are a result of underlying statistics (i.e. shot type and location will give a probability of scoring = xG). xFPL is the combination of these statistics and factors in appearance and bonus points to give an overall expected FPL point score.

McNeil tops the Custom Stats xFPL table for gameweek 35 with a score of 14.4. The 23-year-old took four shots in the box (SiB), attempted three assists, was involved in three 'big chances' (BC) and notched a massive 21-point FPL haul. Haaland and Maddison were joint-top for shots (six), the former was also top for BC (three) but notched an xFPL score of only 5.6. Only two of Maddison's six shots were in the box but the midfielder also attempted five assists and was involved in three BC, leading to an xFPL score of 10.9. Ward-Prowse was the gameweek's most creative player with six chances created, two of which were BC. He was also afforded two SiB, one of which was a BC and notched an xFPL score of 11.4.

Early Transfer Activity Analysed

As the above image from our Transfer Analytics feature shows, with Brighton and Newcastle doubling in gameweek 36, it is no surprise to see C. Wilson, Isak, Mac Allister and Estupiñán comprising four of the five most popular transfers-in. Watkins is the most sold player by a quite a margin with over 150,000 managers losing the forward already, Watkins out for either C. Wilson or Isak accounts for nearly 50% of all forward transfers this week. Toney out for the Newcastle pair accounts for another 10%. In midfield, March to Mac Allister is the most popular move with no other combination over 2.1%. Transfers in defence are quite scattered as well with Henry to Shaw the most popular move, accounting for just 3% of all defensive transfers. Meanwhile, Pope and Steele are the most popular goalkeeper transfers accounting for over 20% of all goalkeeper transfers.

Mac Allister vs Mitoma

March suffered an injury and had to be substituted after coming on in the second half of Brighton's gameweek 35 fixture against Everton and the numbers of the popular replacement options Mac Allister and Mitoma are compared in the above image from our Fix Heatmaps feature. Both players have played a similar number of minutes with the Argentinian international racking up 26 FPL points compared to Mitoma's 15. The 'Expected Goals' (xG) numbers are virtually identical for the pair (2.66 vs 2.61) with Mac Allister taking more shots (22 vs 16) and landing more shots on target (SoT) (eight vs four). In terms of creativity, Mac Allister has the edge as well, with 12 attempted assists to the Japanese international's nine. The Argentinian international looks like a great replacement for March with two doubles over the remaining three gameweeks.
