GW23 Top Five Key Players

Fantasy Football Fix 18 Jan. 2019

Headliner - Mohamed Salah (CRY)

Liverpool returned to winning ways against Brighton, after Salah scored from the spot to seal a 1-0 away win with his 14th league goal of the season. The Egyptian has recorded double-figures in four of the last five gameweeks, producing four goals and three assists. As the Fix Custom Stats table shows, amongst midfielders only Richarlison (14) has fired more than Salah’s 12 shots inside the box (SiB) during that period, while only Pogba (15) has taken more than his nine shots on target (SoT). Four ‘big chances’ created by Salah ranks joint-first amongst midfielders, with only Luiz (five) registering more across all positions. He has also scored in six out of seven home matches against teams outside of the ‘top six’ this season and averaged 8.9 points per game over those fixtures. The Reds have also improved their goal threat, no team has scored more goals than their 16 over the aforementioned period and only Man. United landed more SoT (44) than their 41. Palace have conceded 17 goals in their 11 away matches thus far, so Salah should have plenty of opportunities to get on the scoresheet once again. Our Fix Algorithm predicts a point score of 7.1 for the Egyptian.

Marcus Rashford (BHA)

Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s appointment at Man. United has seen the return of a more attack-minded style, with Rashford leading the line and contributing four goals and two assists across the last five league matches. As the Fix Heatmaps feature shows, the 21-year-old has returned 7.6 points per game during that time which is only beaten by the now-injured Kane (8.2) amongst forwards. His total of 12 SoT is more than any other forward has managed, beating Kane, with 10, Firmino, with eight and Aubameyang, with seven, while only Mitrovic (17) has fired more than Rashford’s 15 SiB. Only Pogba (15) has found the target more often in the last five gameweeks across all positions. No team has scored more goals (16) or fired more SoT than the Red Devils (44) over the last six gameweeks, as the gloom appears to be well and truly lifted from Old Trafford. Their opponents Brighton are historically poor travellers and only Cardiff (115), Southampton (120), Burnley (136) and Fulham (138) have allowed opponents more SiB on their travels than the Seagulls’ 114. With just one away clean sheet all season and 18 goals conceded in 11 matches, it is highly unlikely that the Seagulls can keep the Red Devils’ attack at bay. Our Fix Algorithm predicts Rashford to be at the forefront with a point score of 4.0.

Roberto Firmino (CRY)

Firmino has returned to form of late, firing a hat-trick against Arsenal before netting his eighth goal of the season in the recent defeat to Man. City, returning 7.3 points per game over the last four gameweeks. As the Fix Custom Stats table shows, during that period no forward recorded more than the Brazilian’s five ‘big chances’, while only Rashford (10) produced more than his eight SoT. The 27-year-old also ranks joint-first for ‘big chances’ (five) amongst Liverpool teammates during the same spell, matching the in-form Salah. Only Man. City (40) have scored more goals than Liverpool’s 27 on home turf, with the Reds firing in 64 SoT in those 10 matches. Palace have allowed opponents 20 ‘big chances’ in their 11 away matches, and with the Reds looking to maintain their lead at the top of the table our Fix Algorithm backs Firmino to get attacking returns, with a projected point score of 4.3.

David Silva (hud)

The 3-0 win over Wolves saw D. Silva start for a third consecutive game since his return from injury, with the Spaniard producing 15 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points during that period, closely matching Sterling (17) and Sané (19). As the Fix Custom Stats table shows, in 18 appearances this season the 33-year-old has provided eight FPL involvements (six goals, two assists) and his total of 42 attempted assists ranks second-best amongst Man.City players, just one fewer than Sterling’s total of 43. Eight ‘big chances’ created by D. Silva ranks joint-first amongst teammates, matched by only Sané. The Champions appear to be back to their best with three consecutive wins and only Tottenham (36), Liverpool (41) and Man. Utd (44) fired in more SoT than their 36, or scored more goals than their 14. Huddersfield recently parted ways with Wagner and with a replacement yet to be appointed, at the time of writing, the Terriers look to be in disarray. They have conceded 10 goals in their last six matches which is the sixth-worst in the league. Only Cardiff (35) have allowed opponents more SoT than Huddersfield’s 34, indicating that they have been fortunate not to concede more. Our Fix Algorithm backs the diminutive playmaker to breach the Terriers’ defence with a point score of 5.2.

Matt Doherty (LEI)

It was a long night for Wolves against Man. City on Monday but a spell of favourable fixtures from Gameweek 23 onwards puts Doherty firmly on the radar, with the wing-back having played a hand in seven goals already this season (three goals, four assists). No defender has fired more SiB (24) or SoT (15) this season, while only Digne (40), Holebas (31) and Trippier (27) have produced more than Doherty’s 26 attempted assists. Only Jiménez (23) has recorded more SoT amongst teammates and Moutinho (37) is the only Wolves player with more attempted assists to his name. The Wolves’ defence is the sixth-best in the league having conceded only 28 goals in their 22 matches, and only Liverpool (23) have allowed opponents fewer ‘big chances’ than Wolves’ 25. Leicester have scored only 13 goals in their 11 away matches and our Fix Algorithm predicts a 37% probability of a Wolves’ clean sheet. It also favours the Irishman with a point score.
