GW23 Lessons Learned

Fantasy Football Fix 14 Feb. 2023

xFPL review

xFPL is calculated primarily using expected goals (xG), assists (xA), which combine as Fantasy Premier League (FPL) involvements (xG + xA = xI), as well as expected clean sheets (xC). These numbers are a result of underlying statistics (i.e. shot type and location will give a probability of scoring = xG). xFPL is the combination of these statistics and factors in appearance and bonus points to give an overall expected FPL point score.

Salah tops the Custom Stats xFPL table for gameweek 23 so far with a score of 13.1. The Egyptian international's total of three shots on target (SoT) was only bettered by Gündogan (four) while only Mac Allister (six) and Mitrović (seven) took more shots in the box (SiB) than his five. No player created more chances than Partey (five) but none of these was deemed a 'big chance' which meant a low xFPL score of just 3.8. Mac Allister's owners can count themselves unlucky with just a single-point FPL return, the Argentinian international was top for 'big chances' (three) and deserved a much bigger score as his xFPL score of 8.8 shows. Iheanacho continues to impress, the Foxes' striker had two 'big chance' involvements and four SiB, leading to an xFPL score of 9.1.

Early Transfer Trends

gw23lessons2

As the above image from our Transfer Analytics feature shows, Felix is the most transferred-in player this week off the back of his nine-point haul against West Ham. The Portuguese international could have had a much bigger score if it was not for a marginal off-side decision and with Chelsea playing Southampton this week and a confirmed fixture in both gameweek 25 and 28 he is a great purchase. Toney is the second most transferred in player but with Brentford having a blank fixture in gameweek 25 due to Man. United's involvement in the Carabao Cup final, that move maybe a bit short-sighted. Swapping Martinelli to either Saka or Ødegaard accounts for 10.6% of all transfer activity this week with the Brazilian international being substituted early once again and his replacement Trossard finding the back of the net. 11% of all midfield transfers also involve selling B. Fernandes with double gameweek 25 targets Saka, Salah and Neves the primary benefactors.

Are any Wolves assets worth investing in?

gw23lessons3

Wolves play Bournemouth in gameweek 24 and have a double in gameweek 25 which means their assets are worth considering this week. A look at the Stats Sandbox table above shows that Kilman and Neves are the only outfield players to play every minute for the Midlands side since the restart, with the former slightly ahead for xFPL score (28.21 vs 25.92). Four of their top five xFPL performers are in defence so investing in their backline looks the way to go. Neves has attempted 15 shots which is top by some distance but it is worth mentioning that only six of these were SiB and he has accumulated a measly figure of 1.19 'Expected Goals' (xG) across seven matches. Podence might be worth a punt if he is declared fit, the 27-year-old has taken eight SiB and racked up 1.02 xG in less than half the minutes (293). The Wolves midfielder has also attempted five assists.
