GW21: Differential Focus

19 Jan. 2023

If you are the sort of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) manager who enjoys going against the grain – or takes satisfaction from finding hidden gems before the crowd – then lowly selected players (differentials) can often provide value and offer a source of points which won’t be shared by many other managers. As long as the player picks are justifiable, differentials can give you an edge over your mini-league rivals.

In this article we look ahead to Gameweek 21 and find players from each position who are currently selected by less than 10% of managers, but could reward their owners in the upcoming Gameweeks.

Caveat: This article was written on 19thJanuary, with the Man City vs Spurs fixture still to play.

With Chelsea’s recent woes, those in the market for a goalkeeper may not be considering Kepa Arrizabalaga (£4.6m), but there is justification for bringing him in.

First, he is a bonus points magnet. According to our Opta Stats Sandbox tool, he is ranked 2nd for bonus points per 90 minutes (0.76) - and third for xFPL Points per 90 (4.34) – between Gameweek 9 (when he became first choice again) and Gameweek 20.

Second, he offers a cheap way into one of the top sides in the country. Of course, Chelsea are looking shaky at the moment but, if Graham Potter can steady the ship, then Kepa could offer great value.

Finally, Chelsea’s defensive fixtures are on an upward turn. In Gameweek 21 they face a (historically) tricky fixture at Anfield. However, the Merseyside club is also stuck in a torrid patch of form. Beyond that, they face Fulham, West Ham, and Southampton.
