Gameweek 20

With both Manchester clubs playing twice in Gameweek 20, many managers were tempted to play their Triple Captain chip. In fact, according to our FPL Statistics tool, almost one in six managers in the Top 1000 played their Triple Captain chip in Gameweek 20. Elite XI manager, Mark Mansfield, was amongst those who pushed the button.

With no midweek Champions League distraction on the horizon, the risk of rotation is lower than it would ordinarily be and hence, Erling Haaland (£12.2m) was the prime candidate for the armband, with the likelihood of the striker getting 180 minutes as high as it is possible to be under Pep Guardiola.

Using our Live Insight tool, it was clear to see that many managers had played the Triple Captain chip on Haaland. For managers in the Top 100k, for instance, Haaland’s Effective Ownership was 203.8%, which meant that managers who captained the Norwegian – but didn’t play the chip – actually benefitted from his blank against Manchester United and will anxiously await his performance against Tottenham Hotspur on Thursday evening.

The teams who double still have their remaining fixture to play, and so attention turns to what happened at the weekend. We asked Mark if double Gameweek 20 has gone according to plan so far:

With two games remaining, DGW20 has gone reasonably well. Having two free transfers my intention during the week was simply to move Mitrovic to Martial and roll the second transfer. However, once Martial missed the midweek game completely, I decided it best to bail on that idea given his history. The Darwin injury news came through and then I began the search for the best double Gameweek-ers I didn’t have, and the list was very short. I could have got to Kane for free by selling Foden, but that didn’t appeal. There were other ways to get to Kane involving a hit but I didn’t see the point in coughing up a goal (4 points) and didn’t fancy moving the furniture around to the degree required.
