GW20: Buy, Sell, Keep

8 Jan. 2023

As the deadline looms closer, it is time to decide what to do with our precious free transfer(s). Aside from playing chips or selecting a captain, our transfers are the single most important aspect of our FPL campaign, and the importance of getting it right cannot be overstated.

In this article we crunch the numbers, analyse the fixtures, take advice from the Algorithm, and decide which player to buy, which player to sell, and which player to keep for Gameweek 20.

Caveats: This article was written on 6th January, with the Fulham vs Chelsea fixture still to play and prior to the domestic cup competitions, which will impact the immediate schedule. Hence, these recommendations have been made with a limited view of upcoming double and blank Gameweeks.

BUY: Harry Kane

Kane (1)

With 19 goal involvements in 18 games, it is difficult to fathom what more Harry Kane (£11.6m) needs to do to convince the 70% of managers who don’t own him, to bring him in.

Yes, his price tag is high and yes, Tottenham’s performances have been inconsistent (to put it mildly) this season, but, if it hadn’t been for the emergence of Erling Haaland (£12.2m) – whose goal tally after half a season is bordering on ridiculous – then Kane would be the name on every FPL manager’s lips.

With an upcoming Spurs double in Gameweek 20 (subject to domestic cup results) there has never been a better excuse to bite the bullet and bring in the England forward. Of course, bringing in Kane is harder than it sounds. With Haaland being a must-own, and most managers owning at least one midfield premium option, some squad reconstruction may well be necessary to fit him in.

A word of caution: Harry Kane is currently on four yellow cards; the threat of a one-game suspension ends after Gameweek 20. If Kane gets booked against Manchester City, then he will miss the game against Arsenal (the second Gameweek 20 fixture).
