GW16 Top Five Key Players

The Editor 7 Dec. 2017

Headliner - Mohamed Salah (EVE)

Salah (9.9) now has an almighty total of 12 goals and four assists from just 15 league appearances for Liverpool this season. The summer signing has already surpassed Liverpool’s top goal scorer total (across all competitions) for the last three seasons with less than half the campaign played. Such heroics have seen a price hike of 10%, which is the most of any player. Foolishly many have failed to captain the Egyptian during his hot-streak – providing at least one Fantasy Premier League (FPL) involvement (goal/assist) in each of his last seven gameweeks. Salah’s output is completely unrivalled during this period with eight goals and sixteen shots on target. If we focus our attentions to more recent form no player has scored more than Salah’s five league goals over the last four gameweeks - with only Eden Hazard (10.8) and Alexis Sanchez (11.8) who have 11 and eight to their name respectively taking more shots on target compared to Salah’s seven. Everton make the small trip to Anfield for gameweek 16 having found a bit of form during the last two gameweeks. However, Liverpool have not lost a game at home this season scoring 13 goals across seven home ties. Salah has directly contributed to 48% of Liverpool’s goals in the league so the Fix algorithm projection of 7.5 points (which is the highest) looks fully justified.

Harry Kane (STK)

Kane (12.8) is certainly testing many FPL manager’s patience at present. In truth, Kane is not entirely to blame since his Spurs teammates have not looked totally at the races in recent weeks, struggling to break down Watford and losing away at Leicester in the last couple of gameweeks. Despite frustrations reaching boiling point as a result of another blank against Watford last gameweek the Spurs man is still the second highest scoring forward in the game and only one point behind Álvaro Morata (10.8). The England international has netted 10 times and taken 28 shots on target this season which surpasses any other forward. Over the last four gameweeks only Austin (6.0), Wilson (6.1) and Rooney (7.3) have scored more goals than Kane’s two. And Lacazette (10.3) and Morata are the only two forwards that have taken more shots on target than the Spurs forward over the last four gameweeks with six each. Spurs will be looking to turn a corner in gameweek 16 at home against a Stoke side that have won only once on the road this season conceding 15 goals in just seven away games. Our Fix algorithm rating of 6.9 points places Kane second in the charts, so expect a strong captaincy selection here.

Roberto Firmino (EVE)

Firmino (8.5), like Kane, has been a frustrating asset to own during the course of the 2017/18 season having scored just one goal from gameweek four to gameweek 14 (11 gameweeks). But, over the course of the last five gameweeks he has averaged a solid six points per game which warrants his inclusion in our top five picks. The Brazilian international has been directly involved in eight Premier League goals this season – scoring five as well as providing three assists from 13 starts. No forward has scored more goals than Firmino during the last six gameweeks and his average of 1.4 shots on target per game is level with Harry Kane. The Liverpool forward is also joint first for big chances created with two over the last six games. Only King (7.0) has produced more attempted assists, with 11, than the South American who has nine to his name. As eluded to in our Salah review, Everton are next up for Liverpool – a game which should see plenty of goals. Our Fix algorithm predicts 5.9 points for Firmino.

Aaron Ramsey (sou)

Ramsey (7.2) has been quietly ticking along this season averaging 5.64 points per game, with two double point hauls so far. Wales’s second favourite son provided the assist for Lacazette’s consolation goal against Man. Utd and he has now been directly involved in 11 league goals; scoring three times and contributing to a further eight assists. The Arsenal midfielder’s underlying numbers are surprisingly good, having landed 14 shots on target this season which sees him ranked sixth amongst midfielders, behind Eriksen (9.1), Hazard, Sanchez, De Bruyne (10.2) and Salah who have 15, 17, 18, 18 and 31 respectively. The Welshman is in esteemed company then, given the fact the aforementioned were priced at least 28% more at the start of the season. Over the last four gameweeks no player has created more big chances or provided more assists than Ramsey, who has four of each. Southampton away in gameweek 16 probably looks more challenging than it may actually be. The Saints have conceded nine goals in their last six games and Ramsey has contributed to 38% of Arsenal’s goals so far, so the outlook looks good for the Arsenal midfielder over the coming weeks.

Mamadou Sakho (BOU)

Sakho (4.9) is fast becoming a bonus point machine, having picked up 10 additional points via the Bonus Point System (BPS) which is interestingly only one less than top placed, Azpilicueta (6.9), who has played five more games than the Crystal Palace man. After their poor start to the season, Crystal Palace have now kept back-to-back clean sheets, against West Brom and Brighton and have only conceded three times over the last four gameweeks – With Chelsea and Liverpool the only two clubs to have conceded less. Of all the defenders, Sakho, has managed the most ball recoveries, with 48, over the last five gameweeks and completed more clearances and aerial duels than any other Crystal Palace defender with 29 and 11. Crystal Palace play Bournemouth at home in gameweek 16 and the Cherries have found the back of the net hard to come by this season. Aside from Huddersfield in gameweek 12 Bournemouth have only managed three goals in their other five most recent games. Factoring in Bournemouth’s goal scoring troubles alongside Crystal Palace’s improved defence could lead to a third clean sheet in a row for the Eagles and our Fix algorithm score of 3.4 suggests this could be likely.
