GW14 Lessons Learned

Fantasy Football Fix 22 Dec. 2020

1. xFPL review

xFPL is calculated primarily using expected goals (xG), assists (xA), which combine as Fantasy Premier League (FPL) involvements (xG + xA = xI), as well as expected clean sheets (xC). These numbers are a result of underlying statistics (i.e. shot type and location will give a probability of scoring = xG). xFPL is the combination of these statistics and factors in appearance and bonus points to give an overall expected FPL point score.

El-Ghazi tops the Custom Stats xFPL table for gameweek 14 with a score of 14.0. The 25-year old took more shots (eight) than any player this gameweek and also led the way for shots on target (SoT) (six). His teammate Grealish was the week’s most creative player with eight attempted assists, only one of these was a ‘big chance’ which explains his low xFPL score of 5.8. No player took more shots in the box (SiB) than Vardy’s six, the Englishman also attempted two assists, registering an xFPL score of 10.3.

2. James and Chilwell replacements

Both of Chelsea’s fullbacks suffered injury issues in gameweek 14 and using the Stats Sandbox for the last four gameweeks the replacement options are compared. Dias tops the table for xFPL (24.12), partly down to Man. City keeping clean sheets in three of their last four matches, and he boasts the highest expected clean sheets (xCS) (2.76) in the comparison. Zouma (18.81) and T. Silva (20.82) also fare well for xFPL and the Chelsea defence is still posting decent numbers, with a xCS of 2.09. Holgate (0.86) and Dallas (0.77) lead the way for expected goals (xG), and only Dunk (nine) has taken more shots than Dallas’ seven over the last four gameweeks, with all of these attempts coming from open play. In terms of creativity, Robertson (11) and Coufal (10) stand out for chances created.

3. Budget strikers compared

Bamford, Calvert-Lewin and C. Wilson have been delivering consistent returns for the last four gameweeks and their numbers are analysed using the Fix Comparison Matrix. Averages are used, since Watkins and C. Wilson have played a game less. Bamford leads the way for FPL points (5.3), goals (0.5), shots (3.0) and SoT (1.8). Despite scoring just one goal in the last four gameweeks, Calvert-Lewin has been ticking along at five points per game, primiarly due to his three assists. He is third for shots (2.5) and SoT (1.5) and leads the way for ‘big chances’ (1.3), which indicates that he remains a good pick. Adams has the lowest shots (1.5) and SoT (0.5) in the comparison but leads the way for attempted assists (1.8). Watkins has been unlucky not to find the back of the net over his last three games, the forward is second for shots (2.7) and SoT (1.7), but this is perhaps explained by his lack of ‘big chances’ (zero).
