GW13 Top Five Key Players

The Editor 23 Nov. 2017

Headliner - Harry Kane (WBA)

Kane (12.8) has certainly tested our patience in recent weeks, blanking in his last two league games. But, it is worth reminding ourselves that at this stage last season he had just five goals to his name, scoring a further 24 across the remaining 26 gameweeks. Last month it was also well documented that he had a better goals to game ratio in 2017 when compared to Ronaldo and Messi. This season he has already had 52.3% more shots than any other striker in the league - 64 versus next best Lukaku (11.5) with 42. Relegation stricken, West Brom, also appear to be favoured opposition of Kane, having scored six goals in five games against the Baggies and never being on the losing side versus the Midlands club. Of his eight goals scored so far this season six of them have come against bottom half opposition. West Brom have conceded nine goals in their last four games and Kane is predicted to be the games top-scorer according to the Fix algorithm with 5.8 points.

Kevin De Bruyne (hud)

De Bruyne (10.1) has survived Guardiola’s wheel of rotation so far having played at least 65 minutes in every single league game this season. The Belgian assists more effectively than Google maps and has maintained his high standards in 2017/18 having already delivered six assists. In fact, the Man. City mainstay has attempted a total of 33 assists so far this season, numbers that cannot be beaten by the Premier League’s other midfield geniuses in the form of Silva (8.4), Eriksen (9.6) Groß (5.9) and Sánchez (11.8) who have tried to assist a goal 30, 26, 24 and 23 times respectively. De Bruyne’s expected FPL involvements (goals/assists) currently sits at 5.7, so this tells you everything you need to know given that he has surpassed that number by 3.3 FPL involvements (in a nutshell: A chance where it would be unlikely to score, he has scored). A guaranteed starter with a total of three goals and three assists in his last six games confirms his position in our top five. Huddersfield have conceded 10 goals in their last five games so our Fix prediction of 4.9 points looks more than achievable.

Paul Pogba (BRI)

Pogba (8.0) appears to be very moderately priced considering that Man. United are scoring 100% more goals with him in the starting line-up - 3.2 goals versus 1.6 goals without. The charismatic French midfielder is also contributing heavily towards those numbers with three goals and three assists in those five games he has featured. His strong output comes as no surprise given that he is averaging 3.8 shots per game, which is more than the likes of Agüero (11.7), Sánchez, Salah (9.6), Lukaku and Morata (10.5) who are averaging 3.6, 3.6, 3.5, 3.5 and 2.8 shots per game respectively. He has also attempted to assist 2.2 goals a game, which is the same amounts as Eriksen and Groß and better than Hazard (10.6) with 1.9. Brighton have now conceded four goals in two games verus “top six” opponents and with Man. United scoring at will when Pogba is in their ranks the Seagulls are set to have their work cut out. Our Fix algorithm projects a point’s haul of 4.0, which is more conservative based on recent pitch time.

Gabriel Jesus (hud)

Jesus (10.5) should be given the nod ahead of Agüero (who played the full 90 minutes midweek) for gameweek 13 after making a 25 minute cameo during Tuesday night’s win over Feyenoord in the Champions League. While Kevin De Bruyne is certainly the safest route into Man. City’s lineup this season, there is plenty of value on offer across the attack if you time your transfers right – and this week looks to be Jesus’ week. The young South American has weighed in with a FPL involvement every 77.1 minutes – bettering Salah, Lukaku and Kane who have attacking returns to their names every 77.8, 98.2 and 105.1 minutes respectively. In terms of totals, Jesus has the same amount of FPL involvements as fellow top five player, De Bruyne, with nine each which is more than Firmino (8.5), six, Sánchez, five and Alli, five. As documented in our section on De Bruyne, Huddersfield have been shipping in the goals recently and Jesus may not require the full 90 minutes to do some damage. Our Fix algorithm predicts a score of 4.2 points.

Differential - Wilfried Zaha (STK)

Zaha (6.8) is currently owned by just 5.4% of live teams which is somewhat of a surprise seeing as he is averaging a goal every two games, is moderately priced and has the potential to explode. During a similar spell last season Zaha experienced a bit of a purple patch, scoring two goals and assisting seven between gameweeks nine and 15 (7 gameweeks in total). His skilful and physical demeanour will always cause teams trouble as can be seen from his results versus “top six” opponents over the last 18 months, scoring two goals and contributing five assists in his last 13 games against elite opposition. Three goals since he returned from injury five gameweeks ago is worthy of inclusion and Stoke have conceded seven goals in their last four games, keeping a clean sheet only twice from twelve games so far this season. The Eagles have scored four goals in their last three games, including a blank away at Spurs. Zaha is certainly benefiting from the return of Loftus-Cheek (4.5) who has assisted two of Crystal Palace’s last five goals and we expect the Ivorian to be involved in any attacking returns in gameweek 13.
