Gameweek 11 Review

After a mixed start to the season, Craig has had green arrows in the last two Gameweeks which have seen his rank rise from 320k to 98k, sitting a comfortable fifth place in the Elite XI league.

As a forward planner, Craig was finding the confluence of events surrounding Gameweek 12 difficult to work around, with so many conflicting factors making any sort of reasonable planning very difficult. In the end, it was the injury to Reece James which forced his hand.

I tend to plan, which isn’t everyone’s cuppa and, while I normally revel in it, the blank in Gameweek 12 – and a few inconvenient flags – were causing a few scratches of my bald head. But there are times, at least in FPL, that lady luck throws a lifeline. Awful luck for Reece James’ World Cup hopes, was manna from heaven for my planning conundrum: instead of navigating KDB-out to a non-blanking player in Gameweek 12, then to Foden, I was gifted the “buy yourself some time” move of Reece to Doherty. None of the other cheap options (I already had Guehi & Botman) were appealing, so I punted on Doherty for a few weeks. He didn’t outscore Guehi, but I’m (REALLY) hoping he gets another chance in Gameweek 12.

In terms of his squad, Craig opted for Vicente Guaita (£4.5m) between the sticks and was rewarded by a double-digit return after the Spanish shot-stopper got all 3 bonus points in a match where he made six saves and kept his side a clean sheet.

In defence, Craig went for a back three of João Cancelo (£7.3m), Kieran Trippier (£5.7m) and Matt Doherty (£4.6m). While the former blanked, following a disappointing performance at Anfield, the latter two both kept a clean sheet. The question regarding Doherty is: will Conte start him again with Gameweek 12 coming around so soon?

There were few returns in Gameweek 11 amongst popular midfield options, with only Andreas Pereira (£4.6m) offering a headed assist in his match against Bournemouth.

Up front, Craig has opted for the powerful trio of Harry Kane (£11.4), Erling Haaland (£12.2m) and Aleksandar Mitrovic (£6.7m). While Haaland blanked for the first time this season, Kane and Mitrovic both scored from the penalty spot, earning Craig a combined total of 16 points.

According to Live Insight, Haaland’s effective ownership (in the Top 100k rank tier) was 188.5% so, while Craig will have been disappointed with his captain blanking, the damage of giving Haaland the armband was minimal (as most other managers did likewise).
