Gameweek 14: Top Three FPL Captaincy Picks

Fantasy Football Fix 1 Dec. 2023

In this blog, the three best Captaincy options for Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Gameweek 14 are discussed. Picks are in the below format:

  1. No.1 predicted by Fix
  2. Alternative high-ownership option. Over 20%
  3. Differential option. Under 20%

Mohamed Salah (FUL)

Salah's total of 10 goals, 38 shots, 17 SoT and 8.46 xG are all top amongst midfielders while only Ward-Prowse (30), Maddison (31), Saka (32) and B. Fernandes (35) have created more chances than his 29. No midfielder has created more 'big chances' (BC) (11) or racked up a higher 'Expected Assists' (xA) total (5.84) than the Merseyside magician. Liverpool have scored 28 goals this campaign with only Newcastle, Villa (31 each) and Man. City (33) being more prolific. The Merseyside outfit are top for both shots (225) and xG (28.79). Their opponents Fulham have conceded 22 goals (13th) and have kept just three clean sheets. The Cottagers are ranked 14th for xGC (22.56). Our Fix Algorithm currently projects a point score of 7.1 for Salah.

Erling Haaland (TOT)

Haaland has dominated all the attacking metrics this season, as the Stats Sandbox image below shows, the Norwegian international is top amongst all players for goals (14), shots (51), shots on target (SoT) (29), 'Expected Goals' (xG) (13.5) and FPL points (103). He has averaged 7.3 FPL points in home matches this season and 8.3 last year. Man. City have been the league's top scorers with 33 goals and are also top for SoT (93). Meanwhile, only Liverpool (28.79) have racked up a higher xG tally than their 27.95. Their visitors Spurs have conceded 17 goals this season (sixth) and have kept four clean sheets. However, they are suffering from injuries and suspensions with their first choice centre-back duo of Romero and Van de Ven both unavailable. This could have a big impact and the floodgates could open, if the Cityzens get off to a fast start. The North London side are ranked 12th for shots conceded (177) and 10th for 'Expected Goals Conceded' (xGC) (19.84). Our Fix Algorithm currently projects a point score of 7.1 for Haaland.

Alexander Isak (MUN)

Isak is Newcastle's joint-top scorer this season with seven goals and he trails only the injured C. Wilson for SoT (15 vs 12), SiB (19 vs 16), BC (12 vs 11) and xG (6.49 vs 5.49) amongst their players. As the below image from our Fix Heatmaps feature shows, Isak has averaged 6.0 FPL points per game at St. James Park this campaign. Only Man. City (33) have scored more goals than the Magpies (31) and the Geordies are third for SoT (76). Their visitors Man. Utd. have conceded 16 goals (fifth) and have kept five clean sheets, but the underlying numbers indicate that they have been lucky to do so. The Manchester side are ranked 15th for shots conceded (193) and 12th for xGC (21.13). Our Fix Algorithm currently projects a point score of 4.8 for Isak.
