Erling Haaland is once again at the centre of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) debate.

With Burnley up next and Manchester City’s talisman projected to score 7.8 points in Gameweek 6 – the highest of any player across the next eight Gameweeks according to the Predicted Points & Stats tool – FPL managers are asking: is now the right time to deploy the Triple Captain chip?
Across the opening five matches, Haaland has looked as reliable as ever:
He’s averaging 9.2 FPL points per game so far, according to the Opta Heatmaps tool. If he hit that score against Burnley, Triple Captain users would be satisfied — but likely hoping for even more.
Burnley have been one of the most generous defences in the Premier League so far:
On paper, this looks like the perfect time to back Haaland with the Triple Captain chip.
Among our Elite XI: Team Reveal managers, several are already pulling the trigger.
All three have activated their Triple Captain chip ahead of Gameweek 6 which can of course still be deactivated. However, it’s important to note that six of the Elite XI are on their Wildcard this week, meaning they cannot combine it with Triple Captain.
If you choose not to triple captain Haaland, you might still face rank damage. His effective ownership is projected to exceed 200% amongst highly engaged managers. That means even if you captain him normally, his points could hurt your rank if he hauls.
There is, however, a concern. Pep Guardiola gave this update on Haaland:
“(Haaland was in) recovery yesterday, he didn’t train. Today I didn’t see him or the rest of the players yet but hopefully he can be back for the next weekend.”
This suggests FPL managers should wait for more news later in the week before committing their Triple Captain chip.
While Burnley (H) looks promising, it’s worth remembering that Manchester City have potentially even tastier home fixtures further down the line:
Saving the chip for one of these could provide more certainty and an even higher ceiling. However, now that managers have two of every chip these could be opportunities to play the Free Hit or Bench Boost instead.
Haaland is in great form, facing a weak defence, and projected to score the most points this Gameweek. If fit, he’s a standout Triple Captain option.
But with doubts over his training and potentially better home fixtures ahead, the decision comes down to your risk appetite. Play it safe and captain him normally, or go for broke with the Triple Captain now.
