Goalkeepers (£8.6M - £8.7M)

Top Fantasy Premier League managers, both current and all-time greats, consistently spend around 8.6% to 8.7% of their budget on goalkeepers. This trend indicates a preference for budget-friendly shot-stoppers over premium options like Ederson. Budget goalkeepers often accumulate more save points and don't have to compete with high-scoring teammates for bonus points, making them better value for money.

Defence (£24.7M - £25.1M)

For the second consecutive season, spending on defence has decreased, with top managers allocating between £24.7M and £25.1M, down from £26.5M - £27.5M in 2022/23. This season saw premium defenders like Alexander-Arnold underperform, failing to reach the 200-point mark achieved in previous seasons. Instead, mid-priced defenders such as White (182 points), Saliba (164 points), and Gabriel (149 points) emerged as top scorers. The ‘All FPL’ group spent the most on defence at 25.5%, all groups showed a general trend towards cost-effective defenders.

Midfield (£40.6M – £40.6M)

Midfielders continue to receive the highest allocation of funds, with top managers spending around £40.6M. This season, eight of the top ten scoring players were midfielders, including stars like Palmer, Foden, Saka, Son, Salah, Ødegaard, Gordon, and Bowen. The FPL scoring system favours midfielders, awarding them extra points for clean sheets and goals, along with additional opportunities to gain points from set-pieces and penalties.

Forwards (£25.7M – £26.0M)

Average spending on forwards has decreased by £1.5M from 2022/23, reflecting a shift in popular formation from 3-4-3 to 3-5-2. Harry Kane’s transfer to Bayern Munich also influenced this trend, as he was the second-highest scoring player last season and one of only two premium forwards, alongside Haaland.

Conclusion

By examining the budget strategies of top FPL managers, you can optimise your own team’s budget allocation and enhance your chances of climbing the Fantasy Premier League rankings. Keep these insights in mind as you plan your transfers and team selection throughout the season.
