Alistair GW5 Points

A Gameweek to forget for our Elite XI manager, with only William Saliba (£5.2m) returning points – Erling Haaland (£14.1m) who is owned by 92.2% of managers doesn’t count! The decision to put the armband on Son Heung-min (£9.1m) was punishable only by a 4-point deficit, which could have been much greater when you consider that Haaland accumulated an xG of 2.74 – and that doesn’t include his decision to pull back from a simple tap-in, to allow teammate Bernardo Silva (£6.4m) to claim a goal.

Gameweeks like these can drive us quickly to temptation and the pull to explore more extreme management options can be overwhelming. Alistair, however, is an experienced manager, having played the game since 2013 and racking up a jaw-dropping 3 x Top 1k finishes in that time! He will take stock of his situation and plot the best way forward.

After one of the worst Gameweeks I can remember ever having, I have been very tempted to hit the Wildcard button. However, I think that I have talked myself down from the [Wildcard] ledge… there just isn’t a clear enough path forward right now and selecting a squad this week will be very tricky.

Gameweek 6 and beyond

A big question for Alistair – and the circa 1 million FPL managers who brought in Son for Gameweek 5 – will be what to do with the South Korean? With two difficult fixtures, before the plum Luton fixture in Gameweek 8, Son’s new owners will be concerned with how anonymous he seemed against Sheffield United. To add insult to injury, Richarlison (£6.8m) took just 10 minutes to register a goal and an assist, effectively winning the game for Spurs. Richarlison’s rejuvenation will be welcome news for Postecoglou and could threaten Son’s minutes in a central role. Should the Tottenham boss decide to maintain the momentum of the Brazilian’s upturn in confidence, Son could find himself pushed out wide once more.

In addition to this, there will be a degree of head-scratching for Alistair over his Chelsea triple-up. The Blues have had amongst the easiest of starts to the Premier League, yet have only managed one win from five, despite the ownership spending over a billion pounds in transfers. It is difficult to know where to start. Ben Chilwell (£5.8m) was rotated for tactical reasons, while Raheem Sterling (£7.2m) and Nicolas Jackson (£7.0m) continue to frustrate owners with plenty of underlying goal threat, but little-to-no end product.

My team does, however, have problems. Triple up on Chelsea is looking like a big mistake. Jackson, despite decent underlying stats, just doesn’t look good enough. Chilwell is no longer even a sure starter. And Sterling flatters to deceive. It’s likely Jackson or Chilwell out this week, for most likely Alvarez or Trippier. Things may change midweek after European fixtures though, so we will see.
