Expected FPL (xFPL) Points Review - A look at the stats

As shown in the image below, Watkins tops the Custom Stats xFPL table for Gameweek 37 with a score of 15.0. The 30-year-old ranked top for 'big chances' (four), shots on target (five) and shots inside the box (six).

Stats for Gameweek 37

No player attempted more assists than B. Fernandes (eight), with two of those classified as 'big chances' created by Opta. He also had five shots and recorded an xFPL score of 7.8.

Mbeumo was joint-top for 'big chances' with four, but the Cameroon international was wasteful in front of goal, landing just one of his six attempts on target. He registered an xFPL score of 13.4, suggesting he really should have returned more than seven FPL points.

No player attempted more shots than Taty (eight), although only one of the Argentina international’s efforts was classified as a 'big chance'. As a result, he recorded a relatively low xFPL score of just 4.4.

Richarlison could be a huge differential for the final day as Spurs chase Premier League survival. The Brazilian attempted three shots in the box, two of which were classified as 'big chances', while he also created a 'big chance'. He recorded an xFPL score of 8.5, the seventh-highest total of the Gameweek.

What is xFPL?

xFPL is calculated primarily using expected goals (xG) and expected assists (xA), which combine to form expected FPL involvements (xG + xA = xI), along with expected clean sheets (xCS). These values are based on underlying statistics — for example, shot type and location determine the probability of scoring, which contributes to xG. xFPL then combines these metrics, factoring in appearance and bonus points to produce an overall expected FPL point score.

Early FPL Transfer Activity Analysed - Which players are FPL managers buying and selling?

As shown in the Transfer Analytics tool below, Anderson is the most transferred-in player ahead of the final Gameweek, with nearly 60,000 FPL managers adding him to their teams at the time of writing.

Despite failing to deliver an FPL return for three consecutive Gameweeks, Bowen is the second-most transferred-in player, with West Ham needing a win against Leeds on the final day.

Gibbs-White, Szoboszlai and Calvert-Lewin all rewarded their owners in Gameweek 37 and remain popular transfer targets.

Meanwhile, Thiago, Wilson, João Pedro and Cherki are among the most-sold players after blanking in Gameweek 37. Rogers returned 12 FPL points but is still the third-most sold player, with rotation likely for Aston Villa following their Europa League final on 20th May.

Looking at the top 10 forward transfer combinations, Thiago → Bowen (7.6%) and Watkins → Bowen (6.1%) are the most popular transfers across all positions with no combination over 10%.

Budget forwards are popular with Calvert-Lewin, Osula, Flemming and Richarlison seeing plenty of transfers in. Gyökeres was benched against Burnley and with Arsenal already crowned Champions, the Swedish international's minutes are in doubt in Gameweek 38 which has led to several sales.

The top 10 midfielder transfer combinations are fairly scattered with no combination over 4.0%. Anderson is a popular pick after his haul against Man United and so is his team-mate Gibbs-White. Liverpool assets Szoboszlai and Gakpo are also popular ahead of Liverpool's last home game of the season against Brentford. Meanwhile, Wilson, Rogers, Rice, Sarr and Semenyo are the players being sold.

The top 10 defender transfer combinations are also spread out with Lacroix to Virgil the most popular (6.0%). The Dutch international offers goal threat and DEFCON potential with Liverpool looking to finish on a high. Mavropanos is also popular, the Greek international will be key to the Hammers hopes of avoiding relegation.

The Relegation Battle - Richarlison vs Bowen

The Premier League relegation battle is going right down to the final day. Spurs need just a draw to secure survival, while West Ham must beat Leeds and hope Spurs lose.

Player points comparison Richarlison vs Bowen

As the above image from our Player Heatmaps feature shows, Bowen (32) has scored eight more FPL points than Richarlison (24) over the last six Gameweeks. The Brazilian international's gametime was often curtailed during that period but after Solanke's injury, he has played 90 minutes in every game over the last three Gameweeks.

Player Stats Comparison Richarlison vs Bowen

As the statistics above show, Richarlison carries the greater goal threat, while Bowen is more of a creator.

The Brazilian has scored twice over the last six Gameweeks, compared to none for Bowen, and is also significantly ahead for shots in the box (13 vs six) and Expected Goals (2.37 vs 0.85).

However, Bowen comes out on top creatively. He has registered four FPL assists over the same period and leads Richarlison for attempted assists (11 vs two), 'big chances' created (five vs two) and Expected Assists (2.44 vs 0.99). He also has the potential to pick up Defensive Contribution Points, something he has already done several times this season.

With both forwards also on spot-kick duties, there is very little to separate them. However, Richarlison is £1.3m cheaper than Bowen, which could make him the more accessible option for FPL managers with just one Free Transfer.
