Expected FPL (xFPL) Points Review - A look at the stats

As shown in the image below, Haaland tops the Custom Stats xFPL table for Gameweek 36 so far, with a score of 13.8 and a game still to come against Crystal Palace.

The Norwegian international ranked top for 'big chances' (four), shots on target (four) and shots inside the box (five).

Stats for Gameweek 36

No player attempted more assists than Doku (six), two of which were classified by Opta as 'big chances' created. He also attempted three shots in the box and recorded an xFPL score of 10.5.

Sarr was top for shots (six). The Senegalese international attempted five shots in the box, two of which were deemed 'big chances', and landed three attempts on target. His xFPL score of 8.0 indicates that his backers were unlucky to come away with only seven FPL points.

Bruno G. was awarded two bonus points despite not registering any attacking returns, and the underlying stats show why. The 28-year-old took three shots in the box, one of which was a 'big chance', and attempted three assists, one of which was classified as a 'big chance' created. He racked up an xFPL score of 7.9.

Muñoz was top among all players for 'big chances' created (three). The Colombian international was a popular buy ahead of Palace’s Double Gameweek, and his owners can feel hard done by, as he created four chances and accumulated an xFPL score of 7.6.

What is xFPL?

xFPL is calculated primarily using expected goals (xG) and expected assists (xA), which combine to form expected FPL involvements (xG + xA = xI), along with expected clean sheets (xCS). These values are based on underlying statistics — for example, shot type and location determine the probability of scoring, which contributes to xG. xFPL then combines these metrics, factoring in appearance and bonus points to produce an overall expected FPL point score.

Early FPL Transfer Activity Analysed - Which players are FPL managers buying and selling?

As shown in the Transfer Analytics tool below, Doku is the most transferred-in player ahead of Gameweek 37, with nearly 100,000 FPL managers adding him to their teams at the time of writing.

Gyökeres, Saka and Rice all failed to deliver any FPL returns last Gameweek, but they are still in the top five for transfers in, with the Gunners hosting relegated Burnley at the Emirates next weekend.

Gibbs-White is the most-sold player after the England international missed out for Forest due to the injury he sustained against Chelsea. Semenyo is the second-most sold player, with several FPL managers parting ways with the Ghanaian international before his second Double Gameweek fixture.

The Villa duo of Rogers and Watkins are also being sold after their fixture against Burnley. The Midlands side are likely to rotate over the next two Gameweeks with the Europa League final in mind.

Looking at the top 10 forward transfer combinations, João Pedro → Gyökeres (22.4%) and Watkins → Gyökeres (22.4%) are the most popular transfer combinations across all positions.

Six of the top 10 forward transfer combinations involve bringing in the Swedish international with Richarlison, Thiago and Osula the other popular targets. Welbeck, Bowen, Mateta, Calvert-Lewin and even Haaland are the forwards on the chopping block.

The top 10 defender transfer combinations are more scattered with no combination over 10%. Bringing in Saka is the priority for FPL managers with the winger appearing in six of the top 10 midfielder transfer combinations. Doku, Eze, Dewsbury-Hall and Rice are the other popular midfield assets with Palmer, Semenyo, Gibbs-White, Okafor and Rogers making way.

The top 10 defender transfer combinations are also dominated by Arsenal assets with Saliba and Gabriel taking up six of the top 10 spots. Tarkowski is also popular after his haul against Palace, the 33-year-old plays Sunderland in Everton's final home game of the season next weekend. Palace defenders Muñoz and Lacroix are being sold in droves while Senesi is also seeing sales despite returns in consecutive Gameweeks.

Best Man City midfielder - Doku vs Cherki vs Semenyo

Man City midfielders have been a popular source of FPL points over the last six Gameweeks with both Doku and Cherki delivering returns.

Player Comparison Doku vs Cherki vs Semenyo

As the above image from our Fix Comparison Matrix shows, Doku has scored 42 FPL points over the last six Gameweeks, 13 more than Cherki and a whopping 30 more than the popular Semenyo. They have all played a similar number of minutes as well.

Goal Threat

Doku has scored four goals, while Cherki has managed just one. Semenyo has failed to find the back of the net over the aforementioned period.

Cherki (20) has attempted nearly as many shots as the other two combined, but has found the target with only five of them. Meanwhile, six of Doku’s shots have tested the opposition goalkeeper, highlighting the Belgian international’s red-hot form.

In terms of big chances, there is still very little in it, with the trio accumulating just three in total across the last six Gameweeks.

Creativity

There is not much to split Doku and Cherki for chances created (14 vs 16), while Semenyo is some way off with just four.

The Belgian and the Frenchman are also tied for 'big chances' created, which indicates that Doku should perhaps have more than just one assist to his name.

Conclusion

Based on the above analysis, and the likelihood of more secure game time given Man City’s fixture congestion, Doku does appear to be the best Man City midfield pick for the final two Gameweeks.
