FPL Gameweek 2 Post-Deadline Analysis: Haaland Leads the Way as Palmer Misses Out

Gameweek 2 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) is only just underway, but the early data already highlights some key captaincy and ownership trends.

Erling Haaland is a standout choice among top managers, while Cole Palmer’s unexpected withdrawal in the warm-up for Chelsea’s 5-1 win against West Ham has left his backers frustrated.

With most of the fixtures still to come, let’s take a closer look at how FPL managers are approaching the gameweek so far.

Captaincy

The captaincy landscape for Gameweek 2 shows Haaland as the clear favourite across all top rank tiers, even with Manchester City facing Spurs under new manager Thomas Frank.

PlayerTop 1M (%)Top 100k (%)Top 10k (%)Overall (%)
Haaland48.652.461.415.1
Salah17.613.24.332.9
Palmer7.77.67.912.5
Saka5.04.05.35.0
Gyökeres3.64.06.07.1

Haaland’s captaincy rises from 15.1% overall to over 61% in the top 10k, showing how heavily backed he is by the top-ranked managers. Around 3% of the top 10k have even activated their Triple Captain chip on him this week.

Mohamed Salah, on the other hand, sees his captaincy percentage fall from 32.9% overall to just 4.3% in the top 10k ahead of Liverpool’s clash with Newcastle. Cole Palmer attracted consistent support across the tiers, but his late withdrawal against West Ham denied managers the chance to benefit from Chelsea’s five-goal performance. Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka and Viktor Gyökeres, who face Leeds, also carry steady levels of backing.

Effective Ownership

Effective ownership (EO) already shows some big early differences in how assets are shaping up in Gameweek 2.

PlayerTop 1M (EO%)Top 100k (EO%)Top 10k (EO%)Overall (EO%)
Haaland121.0130.7149.241.0
Salah60.552.326.593.1
Palmer56.654.145.673.5
João Pedro45.039.927.558.5

Wood32.334.037.918.3
Saka20.017.718.822.1
Gyökeres15.916.721.932.6

Haaland’s EO surges to almost 150% in the top 10k, reflecting both captaincy and high ownership levels. Salah remains very highly owned overall but drops sharply in top tiers. Palmer’s EO is strong across all ranks (73.5% overall), but with him missing out against West Ham, managers will be hoping for a quick return in Gameweek 3.

Chip Usage

Top managers are already playing aggressively with their chips this season.

ChipTop 1M (%)Top 100k (%)Top 10k (%)Overall (%)
Triple Captain1.62.45.61.8
Bench Boost1.52.12.81.7
Free Hit4.14.39.81.5
Wildcard4.35.98.64.1

Almost 10% of the top 10k have used their Free Hit in Gameweek 2 compared to just 1.5% overall. Triple Captain usage also climbs to 5.6% at the top end, mostly on Haaland.

Conclusion

Although Gameweek 2 is just beginning, some early FPL trends are already clear:

With the bulk of the Gameweek 2 fixtures still to come, these early insights set the stage for another big weekend in FPL.
