Expected FPL Points Review - A look at the stats

As the below image shows, Van de Ven tops the Custom Stats xFPL table for Gameweek 9 with a score of 13.6, the Dutch international scored both his 'big chances' and kept a clean sheet.

Stats for Gameweek 9

No player attempted more shots (six) or shots in the box (five) than Raúl. The Mexican international, however, managed to hit the target just once and ended with an xFPL score of 5.2.

Mbeumo was heavily involved, taking three shots in the box — two of which were ‘big chances’ — and also creating another ‘big chance’ that Sesko failed to convert. The Cameroon international ranked third for xFPL (10.1), behind only Rodon (10.2) and Van de Ven (13.6).

Foden led the way for attempted assists (seven), though none were classified as ‘big chances’, resulting in a modest xFPL score of 4.5.

Salah’s shot volume is on the rise. The Egyptian took four shots in the box — one a ‘big chance’ — and finally found the net after three consecutive blanks. Despite scoring, he still registered a relatively low xFPL of 6.0.

Enzo, a popular transfer this week, delivered encouraging underlying numbers. He took four shots (two in the box), landed three on target, and attempted three assists — one of which was a ‘big chance’ created — earning him an xFPL of 5.0.

B. Fernandes owners can count themselves unlucky. The Portuguese playmaker fired three shots in the box (one a ‘big chance’) and created another big opportunity for Mbeumo, but came away with no returns despite an xFPL of 6.4.

What is xFPL?

xFPL is calculated primarily using expected goals (xG) and expected assists (xA), which combine to form expected FPL involvements (xG + xA = xI), along with expected clean sheets (xCS). These values are based on underlying statistics — for example, shot type and location determine the probability of scoring, which contributes to xG. xFPL then combines these metrics, factoring in appearance and bonus points to produce an overall expected FPL point score.

Early FPL Transfer Activity Analysed - Which players are FPL managers buying and selling?

As shown in the Transfer Analytics tool below, Mbeumo is the most transferred-in player ahead of Gameweek 10, with over 400,000 FPL managers adding him to their teams at the time of writing.

Transfer Activity for Fantasy Premier League 2025/26 Gameweek 10

Despite their blanks in Gameweek 9, Mateta and Woltemade continue to be popular options with the pair racking up over 300,000 transfers in combined.

Budget forwards Thiago and Welbeck both found the back of the net over the weekend and are also being transferred in.

Meanwhile, João Pedro's consecutive blanks have led to him becoming the most transferred player out with over 350,000 FPL managers selling the Brazilian international.

Salah's goal against Brentford was not enough to convince FPL managers, over 125,000 of his owners have sold him already.

A look at the Top 10 forward transfer combinations shows that João Pedro to Mateta (37.7%) is the most popular transfer for Gameweek 10 by a significant margin. Gyökeres, Bowen, and Isak are the other forwards being sold with Mateta, Thiago, Woltemade, Welbeck and Kroupi.Jr coming in.

The Top 10 midfield transfer combinations are a bit more scattered but Reijnders to Mbeumo (15.0%) is still the most popular, ahead of Kudus to Mbeumo (6.8%). Gakpo, Saka, Sarr and Enzo are also popular transfers in with Foden, Salah, and Anthony on the chopping block.

In defence, the Top 10 transfer combinations continue to be dominated by Arsenal defenders Gabriel and J.Timber. Mukiele is also a popular transfer in with Andersen, Tarkowski, Virgil and Alderete being sold.

Best Budget Forward - Welbeck vs Thiago

Welbeck and Thiago have both emerged as popular transfer options for FPL managers seeking to free up funds for upgrades this week. The pair have combined for five goals over the last three Gameweeks.

Points Per game for Welbeck and Thiago

As shown in the Player Heatmaps feature, Welbeck has averaged 6.7 FPL points per game during that period, while Thiago has averaged 5.0.

Stats Comparison Welbeck vs Thiago

Although Welbeck has scored more goals (three) than Thiago (two), the underlying data tells a different story — Thiago’s numbers are stronger across most key attacking metrics. The Brentford forward leads for shots in the box (11 vs 2), shots on target (7 vs 4), and Expected Goals (xG) (3.44 vs 0.59).

Welbeck does hold the advantage in creativity, with six attempted assists compared to Thiago’s none, though the quality of these chances has been low, reflected by his modest 0.23 Expected Assists (xA).

Overall, the data suggests Thiago is the stronger long-term pick.
