Alexander-Arnold (28.1) is clear at the top of the defender projections, with his teammate Robertson close behind at 26.0. It is perhaps a tad surprising to see Rúben (24.3) in third given his limited attacking output. However, as the below image from our Stats Sandbox feature shows, no team conceded fewer shots in the box (SiB) than Man. City last season and he is one of the most nailed players in their backline.
Virgil (24.3) is also projected to score the same points as Rúben, but as the numbers in the below image from our Fix Comparison Matrix show, he tops the comparison of the Algorithm's top five defenders for both shots on target (SoT) (10) and 'big chances' (BC) (five). At £6.0m, he could be great value with just 10 shots less than Alexander-Arnold last season.
Estupiñan (23.6) is the pick of the defenders at £5.0m and under, with Gabriel (22.2) slightly behind. Amongst the £4.5m defenders, the Brentford duo of Henry (23.5) and Pinnock (21.5) look to be great picks with a kind run of fixtures for the Bees, as shown in the below image from our Fixture Analyser tool. Brighton and Man. City's favourable fixtures mean their assets also feature highly in the defender projections.
