Ahead of the 2025/26 Fantasy Premier League season, several players have seen their positions reclassified, providing managers with new opportunities to optimise their teams.
Some of the biggest changes include Matheus Cunha, Omar Marmoush, and Jarrod Bowen, among others.
Here’s a breakdown of the key position changes and their potential impact on FPL strategy.
Matheus Cunha has made a move to Manchester United from Wolverhampton Wanderers, and with that comes a position change in FPL.
Now classified as a midfielder, Cunha is expected to play as a No. 10 in Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 formation, a role similar to the one he held at Wolves last season.
He registered 44 shots on target last season, the fifth most in the league, according to the Opta Stats Sandbox tool. With a career-best points total in 2024/25—scoring 15 goals and providing 8 assists—his new classification could offer significant points potential.
After joining Manchester City midway through last season, Omar Marmoush has now been reclassified as a midfielder.
Marmoush mainly played as an attacking midfielder for City, and his FPL position reflects that.
His 49 shots and 27 shots in the box, both team-leading stats during the second half of the season for Man City, can be viewed on his Opta Shotmap, available in the Preseason Pack for just £1.
His new position could make him an intriguing midfield option this season.
West Ham's Jarrod Bowen has undergone a significant position change, moving from midfielder to forward in FPL.
Under manager Graham Potter’s 3-5-2 formation, as seen in the Match Centre tool with West Ham's lineup against Forest in Gameweek 37, Bowen was played in a forward role for the second half of the 2024/25 season.
His impressive form after Gameweek 20 saw him score 8 goals and provide 5 assists, making him the fourth-highest scoring FPL player from that point onwards.
His new classification as a forward may unlock even greater value for managers looking to boost their attack.
Liverpool's Cody Gakpo has shifted from forward to midfielder in FPL after primarily playing on the left side of the attack last season. His new role could offer better value as he’ll now play a deeper role in Liverpool’s offensive setup.
However, as shown in the Opta Heatmaps feature, he averaged just 3.6 points per game in 2024/25. FPL managers will be hoping for better attacking returns from him in his new position.
