Choosing the right premium midfielders can be a game-changer in Fantasy Premier League (FPL).
These players often become the captaincy choices week after week, providing the potential for massive points.
FPL Rule Change Reminder: Defensive contributions now include ball recoveries, making the FPL points system more rewarding for midfielders.
This new rule means that premium midfielders who regularly contribute defensively can earn points from clearances, blocks, interceptions, tackles (CBIRT), and ball recoveries. To get two points for defensive contributions, midfielders will need 12, compared to the 10 required for defenders.
While most premium picks won’t see a drastic change, some midfielders are well-positioned to benefit from this rule. In this blog, we’ll uncover the top £8.5m–£14.5m midfielders to target for the 2025/26 season.
Using the Fix Comparison Matrix, the best Midfielder options in the £8.5m-£14.5m are compared. Wirtz is left out as there is no Premier League data for the German international, while Son has announced his decision to leave Spurs. Averages are used since certain players played fewer games.
Mohamed Salah had a record-breaking FPL season last year, and with new attacking additions like Frimpong, Kerkez, Wirtz, and Ekitike, there’s every reason to believe this year will be just as spectacular.
As expected, Salah leads the comparison in almost every metric, except for 'Attempted Assists' (2.3), where he ranks third, and 'Penalty Area Actions', where he sits in fourth.
Cole Palmer had a mixed season, with disappointing returns in the second half. Despite this, he still averaged an impressive 5.8 FPL points per game (second) and nearly a goal every other game (0.4).
His shot volume matched Salah's (3.4), and his creativity numbers also saw a boost (2.4, second).
While it’s unclear which version of Palmer will show up on the opening day, his explosive performances against Brighton last season and in the Club World Cup final prove he can deliver big returns in any match.
As the above image from our Stats Sandbox feature shows, he was joint-top for shots amongst midfielders last season.
Despite a challenging season for Manchester United, Bruno Fernandes still managed eight goals and 12 assists, earning a total of 174 FPL points.
Only J. Murphy, Elanga (both 11), and Salah (18) registered more assists (10) than the Portuguese international. Additionally, he ranked sixth for shots.
As the above image from our Stats Sandbox feature shows, amongst midfielders in the Premium price bracket he was significantly ahead for DEFCON (324), managing more than double that of Palmer (153) and is the only premium midfielder likely to rack up the two additional points.
Saka started the season strong but missed a significant portion due to injury. Despite playing just 1,724 minutes, the England international still managed six goals and 11 assists. He was also Arsenal’s top ‘big chance’ creator with 22 chances created.
The arrival of Gyökeres at Arsenal could boost Saka’s FPL potential, providing him with a clinical striker to finish the many chances he creates. However, there is a risk that Saka may lose penalty duties to the Swedish international.
Marmoush joined Manchester City in the January transfer window and had a solid introduction to the Premier League, scoring seven goals and providing one assist over five months. The Egyptian international has been classified as a midfielder this season, but with Manchester City’s depth in midfield and recent signings, his starting spot remains uncertain.
However, as the above image from our Points Projections feature shows, Man. City are projected to score the most goals over the opening six Gameweeks, so the Egyptian international could be a great differential.
As shown in the image below from our Player Points Projections feature, Salah remains the clear frontrunner with 39.8 projected points, well ahead of Palmer, who sits second with 29.9.
Saka (24.2) and Bruno Fernandes (22.2) are closely matched, while limited data for Wirtz (20.3) sees the German international ranked fifth. Meanwhile, Marmoush’s gametime uncertainty has a notable impact on his projection, with the Egyptian international managing just 15.9 points.
