Gameweek 28

When evaluating Phil’s score in Gameweek 28, it seems somewhat confusing that he suffered a red arrow despite a way above average score of 53. Upon closer inspection, it becomes clear why. Phil made 5 transfers ahead of Gameweek 28 at a penalty of 12 points. To discover the thinking behind such an extreme move, we have to take a trip back to earlier in the season.

My season really kick started in Gameweek 22. Having resisted the temptation of playing the TC on Haaland in GW20 (it was seriously considered!), I deployed it to great effect in DGW22 on Rashford. I also took a tactical -8 to bring in Estupinan and Mitoma, getting on them earlier than most and jumping from 393k to 136k. Having got the Brighton players in early, and being happy with my choices within the Brighton team, I never once considered the very popular move of Wildcarding in GW26. What followed, holding my 3 Liverpool assets and the 7-0 thumping of United, was way beyond my expectations. A small red arrow would have been acceptable in my eyes. It was effectively about a 40-point swing [not playing the Wildcard].

Salah 2

The clear downside to not Wildcarding in Gameweek 26, is that the temptation to hold all of those high-scoring Liverpool assets for their fixture against Bournemouth was understandably strong, even though it wasn’t to happen for them on the night. Also, many of the managers who wildcarded in Gameweek 26, were belatedly rewarded for the faith they placed in their Brighton and Brentford assets, with many of them returning on their second fixtures. Phil feels that much of what he gained in Gameweek 26 was then lost in Gameweek 27 but, he has one distinct advantage – he still has his wildcard.
