Best Double Gameweek assets - Villa, Southampton and Wolves

Fantasy Football Fix 1 March 2022

Villa, Southampton and Wolves feature twice in gameweek 28 and in this blog the best assets from those teams are analysed and compared with single gameweek players using the Stats Sandbox feature.

Aston Villa

Ramsey is top amongst Villa players for xFPL (27.93) over the last six matches and the youngster is also top for 'big chances' (three). A large chunk of these were against Leeds though which might make the numbers a bit misleading. Digne is top for chances created (11) but only fifth for 'Expected Assists' (0.48) which indicates these are not high quality chances. Coutinho is top for shots (14), shots on target (SoT) (five) but has registered only a total of 1.45 xG across six matches, at an average of just 0.24. Watkins has only managed a paltry two SoT in six appearances and an xG of just 1.05. Coutinho does appear to be the best attacking option but his numbers overall are quite poor, 25 midfielders have averaged a higher xG per game than the Brazilian (0.24) across the last six gameweeks.

Southampton

Adams is top for xFPL (26.06) and Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points amongst Southampton players over their last six matches. Although he is only third for shots (13), he is top for 'big chances' (four) which sees him top for xG (2.53). Only Kane (4.44) and Ronaldo (2.73) have registered a higher xG across the aforementioned period amongst forwards. The more popular Broja is 10th for xFPL (19.44) which is surprising seeing that he is top for shots in the box (SiB) (14). He is second for xG (1.65) with only two 'big chances' across six matches. Ward-Prowse is by some distance their most creative player with 16 attempted assists which sees him second for xFPL (26.04) and FPL points (28). Only B. Fernandes (27) and Raphinha (19) have managed more amongst midfielders. However, his goal threat from open play is minimal with a combined xG of 0.24 across six matches. In defence, Walker-Peters is the standout option with five SoT, six attempted assists and an xFPL score of 24.76. Only Van Dijk (six) has landed more SoT amongst defenders.

Wolves

Dendoncker leads the way amongst Wolves players for xFPL (20.33) and FPL points (25). The midfielder has landed three SoT and attempted three assists over their last six matches. Jiménez is out in front for shots (10), SoT (five) and xG (1.35), but his benching in gameweek 26 is a little concerning. Seven forwards have registered a higher xG total than the Mexican over the aforementioned period and he only attempted three assists. Podence has been their most creative player with 12 chances created, but these have accumulated an xA total of just 0.89. 16 midfielders have posted better xA figures over that period. In defence, the full-back position has been rotated and there is not much to pick between the centre-backs with Kilman and Saïss both managing a SoT apiece. Wolves have an 'Expected Clean Sheet' (xCS) tally of just 1.52 over their last six matches with only five teams faring worse.

Southampton assets definitely look to be the best on paper and the eye, with their player‘s numbers rivalling players across the league, and more importantly at bigger clubs. Villa and Wolves both have double gameweeks and a guaranteed game in gameweek 30 but their players' form might not merit picking them over other single gameweek players.
