Born in Hammersmith in 2001, Olise is a product of the Reading academy and he made his debut for the club in the 2018/19 season. He went on to make a total of 67 appearances for the Championship side with 44 of them coming in 2020/21 where he notched seven goals and 12 assists. His performances led to him being awarded the EFL Young Player of the Season and he was included in the Championship Team of the Season as well as the PFA’s Championship Team of the Year. Highly sought after by a number of Premier League clubs, he was signed by Palace for a fee of £8.37m ahead of the 2021/22 season.
Olise posted impressive numbers in the Championship and ranked fourth for chances created (84) but it is worth mentioning that 40 of these came from set pieces, so it remains to be seen whether he retains dead ball duties with the Eagles. 20 of his 71 shots were outside from the penalty area so he is not exactly a penalty box predator either. Predominantly left-footed, he was primarily used as a #10, playing just behind the striker in Reading’s system but was also effective on the right wing. Palace have parted ways with Hodgson over the summer and it remains to be seen what sort of system Viera deploys and whether he goes with a more front foot approach than his predecessor. The Eagles have a stiff opening run of fixtures so it is best to monitor how the youngster adjusts to the Premier League before investing
