Born in Dublin, Ireland in 1992, Doherty was spotted by Wolves when he was playing against them for Bohemians in a preseason game in 2010. Despite never having played a game for Bohemians’ first team, he was invited for a trial at Wolves and signed a two year deal for a transfer fee of just £75,000. He made his debut for the midlands club in the FA Cup in January of 2011 and made his Premier League debut in September that year against Liverpool. He was then loaned out to Scottish club Hibernian in January 2012 for whom he made 13 appearances, scoring twice. He had another loan spell later that year for Bury where he made 17 appearances, scoring once. Under Saunders, Doherty became a first team regular for Wolves in the second half of the 2012/13 season and has become a mainstay since, helping the Midlands side gain promotion to the Premier League in 2018/19. Over the past two seasons, he has been one of the league’s most attacking defenders with eight goals and eleven assists over 74 matches. He has also made 11 appearances for the Republic of Ireland, scoring once.

Doherty thrived in a wingback system at Wolves that allowed him plenty of license to get forward. Spurs use a back four but the right-back is given more license to get forward as it becomes a back three in attack, so Doherty should get similar attacking opportunities. The Irishman played 45 games in the Championship season Wolves got promoted and missed just two games over the last two seasons so there are no doubts about his fitness. He was a starter in the Europa League as well for Wolves so he is capable of playing three games a week. If he can mirror his attacking returns at Wolves, he could be a bargain at his 6.0m price.
