Signed from Shakhtar Donetsk in the Ukranian Premier League Fred perhaps does not arrive in England with a great deal of potential for Fantasy Premier League managers but at £47M he's a significant investment for Manchester United and should prove a key addition to their ranks.

Fred's goalscoring stats suggest the perception of him as a primarily holding midfielder are likely close to the mark; he's scored 14 goals in 156 games over the past 5 seasons for Donetsk. Similarly, in the Champions League over the last 2 seasons he's notched 2 goals and 2 assists across 14 appearances.

But it's his quality at the top level, including representing Brazil, that will be of most interest to FPL managers. Despite defensive duties, the 26 year old is seen as a dynamic and modern footballer, with an eye for a pass,and capable of moving with the ball and beating his man through midfield. At United, he is likely to form a strong midfield three with Matic at the base, Fred in a driving box-to-box role, and allowing Paul Pogba more license to get forward.

Overall, Fred is a decent acquisition by United, and whilst he may not score too many fantasy points himself, he is likely to boost the potential of both his defensive and attacking team mates in Mourinho's team.
