Born in Salto, Uruguay in February 1987, Cavani started his career at Danubio where he played for two years before signing for Palermo in 2007. He spent four seasons at the Italian club, scoring 34 goals in 109 appearances. He signed for Napoli in 2010 for a fee of €17 million where he scored 78 goals over 104 appearances, winning the Serie A golden boot in his third season. In July 2013, he signed for Paris Saint-Germain for a fee of €64 million, the highest ever transfer fee in French Football at the time. He scored 138 league goals for the Parisians over seven seasons with the 2016/17 campaign being the highlight, where he scored 35 goals. He has also scored 50 goals for the Uruguayan national side over 116 appearances.
At the age of 33, Cavani is arguably past his prime but he will be looking to prove his doubters wrong after a poor final season at Paris Saint-Germain where he had to play second fiddle to Neymar and Mbappe. The Uruguayan managed just 35 appearances over the last two seasons due to injury issues and it remains to be seen whether he can overcome those to feature regularly. He is unavailable or Man. Utd’s first game after the international break against Newcastle due to quarantine regulations and it is probably worth waiting to see if he can take Martial’s position on a regular basis before investing.
