Born in Madeira, Portugal in 1985, Ronaldo was promoted from Sporting Lisbon’s youth team in 2001 and became the first player to play for the club's under-16, under-17 and under-18 teams, the B team, and the first team, all within a single season. He scored three goals in 25 appearances for the Portuguese side before being snapped up by Man. Utd in 2003 for a fee of £12.24 million.

His stint at the Red Devils was hugely successful with the Portugal man winning three league titles and the Champions League. He scored a total of 84 league goals for the Manchester side in 196 appearances.

In the 2009 Summer transfer window, he joined Real Madrid for world record transfer fee of £80 million. He won the league title twice with the Spanish giants and the Champions League four times, scoring a total of 311 goals in 292 league appearances. He moved to Italian side Juventus in the 2018 transfer window for a fee of €100 million and scored 81 goals in 98 league appearances, winning the league title twice.

Ronaldo’s numbers over his career have been extraordinary and despite his advancing age, his appetite for goalscoring shows no sign of letting up. He missed only three games through injury last season and won the Serie A Golden Boot with 29 goals. He averaged 0.85 expected goals (xG) and 0.09 expected assists (xA) per game in his last season and his raw shot numbers were impressive too. He took an average of 5.2 shots per game in his last season and registered an average of 1.93 shots on target. He only converted 14% of his shots though, so a lot of them were not from ideal scoring areas. He created only 30 chances all season which indicates that he is an out and out goal scorer now. It would therefore appear that there is not a significant assist potential any more. It is worth mentioning that only six of his 29 goals were from penalties and he is likely to take over spot-kick duties from his compatriot B. Fernandes. Solskjær has already gone on record stating that Ronaldo was not signed to sit on the bench so regular gametime can be expected from the Portuguese man. He is also likely to be used as the Centre Forward, replacing Cavani. A price of 12.5 makes him the most expensive asset in the game alongside Salah but if he can deliver close to his numbers from last season, he could turn out to be a bargain.
