Born in Milton Keynes in 1996, Chilwell is a product of Leicester’s youth academy who first featured in the Foxes’ first team under Ranieri in 2015/16 in the League Cup. He was then loaned out to Huddersfield Town briefly, for just eight appearances. After signing a new five-year contract in July 2016, he made his Premier league debut against Everton in December that year. He went on to make 19 appearances across that campaign, scoring his first goal towards the end of the season. He made 24 appearances in 2017/18 with manager Puel chopping and changing his lineup regularly. The 2018/19 season was where he came to the fore, making 36 appearances and contributing five assists. He upped his attacking game under Rodgers in 2019/20, notching three goals and three assists over just 27 appearances. He has also made 11 appearances for the England national team.
Chelsea have been unable to find a consistent left-back since the departure of Ashley Cole and in Chilwell they finally might have found his successor. Last season, Alonso and Emerson struggled, especially in a back four with the right-footed Azpilicueta often deployed there due to lack of options. Lampard’s system allows the fullbacks plenty of attacking freedom and Chilwell strengths are definitely towards the attacking end of the pitch. He should slot straight into the Blues’ starting lineup after his recovery from a minor ankle injury and at the age of just 23, he should have no problem starting games week in week out. The Chelsea defence should be tighter as a whole with the signing of T. Silva and at 5.5m, Chilwell could be a good option.
